The new 2014 Corvette Stingray has been selected as this year’s Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.

Running a standard 6.2 litre LT1 V8 engine, the pace car features concealed strobe lights and various circuit-orientated safety devices.

It has also been fitted with the optional Z51 Performance Package which includes tweaked aerodynamics for better high speed stability, enhanced brake and transmission cooling, dry-sump lubrication and an electronic limited-slip differential. Completing the conversion is a striking Laguna Blue paintjob with decals on the doors and rear flanks.

The 97th Indianapolis 500, which is the fifth round of the 2013 IndyCar Series, takes place on Sunday, 26 May.

Customers will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the 2014 Corvette Stingray though, as coupé sales aren’t due to begin until this autumn. Prices in the United States start from $51,995 (including a $995 destination charge), while the convertible version is going to cost $5,000 more when it arrives a few months later.

Seat Leon Cup Racer at Wörthersee

0
0
The highlight of Seat’s display at the imminent GTI-Treffen at Wörthersee, Austria is likely to be this just-revealed Leon Cup Racer.

Although it’s intended for use by customer teams in various championships, the Cup Racer’s arrival could also indicate that Seat is considering a return to the World Touring Car Championship.

Seat Leon Cup Racer 2013 Front

Power comes from a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine which generates 325 bhp (243 kW / 330 PS) with 350 Nm (258 lb/ft) of torque. That output is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and an electronically-controlled differential lock.

A slightly different version has also been developed especially for endurance events such as the Nürburgring-based VLN series. It features a sequential transmission and a mechanical differential lock instead.

Under current regulations, the 2.0 litre engine would be ineligible to compete in the WTCC. However, Seat has already admitted that a compliant 1.6 litre turbo motor could be created, thereby solving that particular problem.

Visually, it’s definitely a case of form following function. Nevertheless, the road-going five-door Leon is a handsome car and the Cup Racer looks similarly impressive. Up front, the bumper unit has been redesigned with larger air intakes and it gains a splitter. 18” racing wheels are housed within extended wheel arches and the rear features both a diffuser and high-mounted wing for additional downforce.

Naturally the usual interior trim has been discarded in favour of a full roll cage and a single race seat. Carbon fibre abounds throughout the cabin and most of the controls are mounted on the multi-function steering wheel.

In standard form the Seat Leon Cup Racer is priced at €70,000, while the endurance model costs €95,000. Those amounts (which exclude VAT) equate to roughly £58,900 and £79,900 respectively at current exchange rates.

Seat is expecting deliveries to commence in time for the 2014 season.

Chevrolet is adding to its 2014 Silverado full-size pick-up range with the launch of a premium High Country trim grade.

Available only in crew cab guise, the interior features saddle brown leather upholstery as well as heated and cooled front seats. Also fitted as standard are front and rear park assistance, a Bose audio system and the MyLink multimedia interface that’s controlled via an 8” touchscreen.

The options list isn’t particularly extensive, but it does include the High Country Premium Package which consists of an integrated trailer brake controller, adjustable pedals, a heated steering wheel and the driver alert pack.

On the outside, the High Country gains body-colour bumpers and unique 20” chrome wheels. Its door handles, mirror caps, side mouldings and unique grille are all chrome-plated, too.

Power is provided by a 5.3 litre direct injection EcoTec3 petrol V8 that produces 355 bhp (265 kW / 360 PS), although a larger capacity 6.2 litre engine will also be offered. Both have the capability to switch to a fuel-saving four-cylinder mode under light loads.

North American sales of the Chevrolet Silverado High Country are due to begin this autumn.

Škoda has released a teaser image of its Rapid Sport concept, which is due to debut at this month’s GTI-Treffen in Wörthersee, Austria.

Compared to the showroom model, the changes are fairly predictable. The compact hatchback gets a full body kit, 19” alloy wheels, Recaro front seats and a sports steering wheel, but there’s no word on any engine or chassis tweaks. Completing the package is an asymmetric grey and red colour scheme.

According to Chevrolet, one in six full-size pick-ups are sold to customers in Texas. So it’s hardly surprising that the brand is pandering to that market by launching the Silverado Texas Edition.

Based on the mid-range, V6-powered Silverado LT or the more luxurious, V8-powered LTZ, the Texas Editions come with 20” alloy wheels, unique badges and the trailering equipment pack that includes a locking rear differential.

On LT versions the door mirror caps and door handles are body-coloured, while the wheels have a polished finish. Alternatively, the LTZ models also have a Bose audio system as well as chrome wheels, door handles and mirror caps.

The Silverado Texas Editions add $2,165 to the base price of an LT or $1,895 to an LTZ. For those buyers not in Texas, the optional Custom Sport packages offer identical features (minus the special badges) for the same amounts.

This weekend’s Formula One Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, plays host to the inaugural round of the 2013 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

The event also marks the debut of the all-new 911 GT3 Cup racer. Based on the latest type 991 model, it features rear-wheel drive and a 3.8 litre engine just like the road-going GT3, plus numerous pieces of safety equipment and an enhanced aero package.

In the revival of a familiar partnership, the Porsche-entered VIP car is going to be wearing a striped Martini Racing livery. Guest driving it in Spain will be nine-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb, fresh from his recent Rally Argentina win. The Frenchman is also due to appear at the second round in Monaco later this month.

2013 Zero MMX military motorcycle

0
0
The new all-electric Zero MMX has been developed exclusively for the United States’ Special Operations Forces. Its selection by the military isn’t to make an environmental statement though. Rather, it’s because a lack of noise and a reduced heat signature make the Zero stealthier than a petrol-powered bike.

Based on the civilian MX, the MMX gains several unique features in line with its specialist role. They include quick-swap battery packs, a switchable headlight, keyless ignition and a unique dash. Further modifications mean the MMX has a wade depth of one metre, while bespoke wiring allows front and rear infrared systems to be fitted.

Zero MMX (2013) Dash

Power comes from an updated air-cooled Z-Force brushless motor that develops 54 bhp (40 kW / 54 PS) with 92 Nm (68 lb/ft) of torque. The MMX’s lithium-ion batteries are topped-up while riding via regenerative braking, but when they eventually need recharging the process can be completed in around an hour.

A number of MMX bikes are currently undergoing operational trials.

Earlier this week, Škoda released a teaser sketch of the Rapid Sport concept that’s appearing at the GTI-Treffen at Wörthersee.

Now the actual car has been unveiled. With its asymmetric grey and red paintjob, black grille, 19” alloy wheels, extended side skirts and bespoke bumpers, the concept certainly looks neat.

In 1973 Caterham took over production of the diminutive Seven sports car from Lotus. Now, to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of that occasion, a limited edition ‘40 Years of Caterham’ pack has been launched.

Available on any Seven model in the current line-up, it includes exclusive 15” alloy wheels with ‘40YOC’ centres and Avon ZV3 tyres, a grey leather dashboard, black leather seats with grey piping and a different finish for the transmission tunnel top.

Beetle GSR coming to the UK

0
0
Following its unveiling at February’s Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen has confirmed that 100 examples of the limited edition Beetle GSR are going to be offered to UK customers.

Inspired by the Beetle 1303S Gelb Schwarzer Renner (Yellow Black Racer) of forty years ago, the specification includes side stripes, 19” ‘Tornado’ alloy wheels, R Line bumpers and a prominent rear spoiler.

The performance theme continues in the cabin, where fabric-covered R Line seats, a sports steering wheel, an R Line dash pad and special floor mats all feature. Completing the package is a plaque showing the car’s build number.

Volkswagen Beetle GSR (2014) Side

Originally, only the yellow and black colour scheme shown in the images was going to be available. However, it seems that Volkswagen has reversed that decision because buyers wanting a more subtle look can now choose a platinum grey and black finish instead.

Power comes from a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine, which for Europe is rated at 207 bhp (154 kW / 210 PS) with 280 Nm (206 lb/ft) of torque. That’s sufficient for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 142 mph (228 km/h).

With a six-speed manual gearbox the GSR’s UK price is £24,900, while the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission costs an extra £1,500. Orders are being accepted now, but deliveries aren’t due to begin until September.

Like the original 1303S version, total production of the 2014 Beetle GSR will be limited to 3,500 units, with the majority destined for the United States.

2013 Mugen Shinden Ni unveiled

Mugen has revealed the Shinden Ni, an electric-powered motorcycle that’s due to compete in the 2013 Isle of Man TT Zero Challenge.

Once again, John McGuinness is going to be the team’s sole rider. Last year he managed to secure second place aboard the Mugen, a creditable achievement given it was the bike’s first TT outing.

Clearly the aim in 2013 is to go one better and win the zero-emissions event outright.

To help accomplish that goal, Mugen has been busy refining the bike. As a result the aerodynamics are better, its kerb weight is now 240 kg (529 lbs) and the three-phase, brushless motor produces 120 bhp (90 kW / 122 PS).

This year’s Isle of Man TT races begin on the 25th of May.

2014 Peugeot 308 unveiled

0

While most new cars nowadays end up being larger and heavier than their predecessors, Peugeot is bucking that trend with its 2014 308.

Measuring 4.25 metres (13’ 11”) from bumper to bumper, the C-segment hatchback is actually a couple of centimetres shorter than the first-generation 308. That makes it about the same length as a current Volkswagen Golf, but noticeably more compact than the Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus.

Peugeot 308 Hatchback (2014) Front Side 1
2014 Peugeot 308. Scroll down for more images.

Perhaps more significantly, Peugeot has reduced the car’s weight by an average of 140 kg (308 lbs) across the range. That’s mainly because the 308 is underpinned by the newly-developed EMP2 modular platform, which incorporates a clever use of materials.

The knock-on benefits of less bulk include better efficiency (one variant is reckoned to offer carbon dioxide emissions of just 85 g/km) as well as enhanced ride and handling characteristics.

And the new 308 will need to perform well right across the board. Not only does it face some very talented competitors, but Peugeot is also claiming the 308 is a key ingredient in its strategy to move upmarket.

Of course, a brand saying it’s becoming more premium means absolutely nothing unless customer perception changes accordingly. Therein lies the challenge for Peugeot.

One element that’s supposed to signal the 308’s upmarket qualities is the styling, which is described as ‘classy and dynamic’. It’s neat enough, inoffensive and certainly an improvement on the existing model.

Likewise, the focus on the inside has been refinement. However, some drivers might be put off by the odd-looking cockpit, which uses the same small steering wheel and ‘head up’ instruments arrangement as seen in the recently-launched 208 supermini.

The centre console-mounted 9.7” touchscreen is likely to be more acceptable, though. It controls the infotainment and climate systems, thereby doing a good job of de-cluttering the dashboard.

Peugeot undoubtedly has strong aspirations for the 308, which will be built at the Sochaux plant in France. However, unless its new model can take on and at least equal accomplished rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot is destined to remain a mainstream marque.

After a public debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, sales of the 2014 Peugeot 308 will begin across continental Europe. The UK market launch has been scheduled for January 2014.

Amarok Power-Pickup specs

0

Volkswagen has released further details about its Amarok Power-Pickup concept that appeared at the Wörthersee GTI-Treffen.

The concept’s distinctive, purposeful stance is thanks to a larger front air intake, lowered suspension, 22” alloy wheels and widened wheel arches. Completing the look are its load-space fairing, chrome grille, carbon fibre rear diffuser, tinted taillights and tri-colour decals.

Inside the cab, a pair of leather-trimmed sports seats has been fitted and the specification also includes an infotainment system that’s controlled via an 8” touchscreen.

Volkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup Concept (2013) Front SideVolkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup Concept (2013) Dashboard

While the regular Amarok range features a selection of 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel engines, the Power-Pickup lives up to its name by using a 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel motor instead.

Producing 268 bhp (200 kW / 272 PS) with 600 Nm (443 lb/ft) of torque, it’s connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system. The result is a very respectable 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 7.9 seconds.

Volkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup Concept (2013) InteriorVolkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup Concept (2013) Rear Side

There’s no official word yet on whether something similar to the Power-Pickup might turn into a production model. If it did, a performance-orientated Amarok could be an interesting alternative to traditional SUVs such as Volkswagen’s own Touareg, especially in four-door double cab guise.

City Express van is a re-branded NV200

0
0
Chevrolet has unveiled the City Express, a new small van for the United States and Canada that’s basically a re-badged Nissan NV200.

General Motors has already pursued a similar strategy in Europe, where the Turkish-built Fiat Doblò van is sold as the Vauxhall / Opel Combo.

Using the Doblò as the basis for a Chevrolet product was probably always out of the question, though. That’s because Fiat’s relationship with Chrysler means the Doblò is expected to be marketed in North America under the latter’s Ram brand. So, having Chevrolet and Ram dealers offering essentially the same vehicle would have been a fairly awkward situation.

Chevrolet City Express (2015) Front Side

Measuring 4.73 metres (186.3 inches) long and 1.73 metres (68.1 inches) wide, the City Express will offer users 3.74 cubic metres (122.7 cubic feet) of cargo space with an estimated payload of 680 kg (1,500 lbs).

In LS guise the specification includes dual sliding side doors, electric power-assisted steering, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, six airbags, cloth upholstery and 15” steel wheels. Alternatively, the slightly more upmarket LT trim grade adds electrically-adjustable and heated door mirrors, cruise control and central locking with remote keyless entry.

Both versions are powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine that drives the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. It produces 131 bhp (97 kW / 132 PS) with 188 Nm (139 lb/ft) of torque.

2014 Honda CRF250R and CRF450R

0

Honda is giving its CRF250R and CRF450R motocross bikes a series of updates for 2014.

Changes to the CRF250R are wide-ranging, with key among them being a new mass-centralised aluminium frame that’s intended to help reduce the motorcycle’s centre of gravity. Complementing it are a redesigned rear swing-arm and recalibrated Showa front forks.

Honda CRF250R (2014) Side

The CRF250R’s single-cylinder engine has been revamped too, with better throttle response and more low-down power coming courtesy of dual-stage fuel injection and modifications to the cylinder head and piston. A new twin exhaust system and wider gear ratios for the five-speed transmission complete the upgrades.

The larger capacity CRF450R was thoroughly revised last year, so the 2014 changes are less extensive.

Honda CRF450R (2014) Front Side

Nevertheless, it too receives the dual-stage fuel injection system which, combined with altered silencer internals and tweaks to the engine’s intake and exhaust ports, is claimed to result in more torque and a crisper throttle response. The KYB pneumatic upside-down front forks have also been adjusted for improved oil flow and damping characteristics.

Prices for the 2014 Honda CRF250R and CRF450R have yet to be announced, but it’s expected that they’ll both be available from late summer.

Renault to supply Formula E cars

0
0
Renault, in collaboration with Spark Racing Technology, is to produce the electric-powered single-seaters that’ll be used in the new FIA Formula E Championship.

No technical details have been released yet, but the cars will bear the ‘Spark-Renault’ name and 42 of them are going to be built for next year’s inaugural season.

That figure doesn’t represent the number of entries though, as series organisers are hoping to attract ten teams of two drivers each. Rather, it’s a reflection on the planned format of the events, which will see mandatory pit stops where competitors simply swap cars instead of exchanging battery packs.

Spark-Renault Formula E 2014 (Rendering) Front Side

Commenting on today’s announcement, Alejandro Agag, CEO of the championship’s promoter Formula E Holdings, said: “Renault and Formula E both share the same commitment to innovative technology and sustainable motoring and we’re delighted to welcome them to the Championship as a Founding Partner.

“Not only is Renault one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, with a very successful motorsport pedigree, it is also a pioneer for electric vehicles being the first full-range car manufacturer to market zero-emission vehicles. To have a manufacturer of this calibre onboard is a great testament to the growing appeal of the FIA Formula E Championship.”

The preliminary race calendar for 2014 consists of eight rounds, all of which will be staged on temporary urban or city-centre tracks.

The return of McLaren Honda

0

Honda has confirmed it’ll be returning to Formula One as an engine supplier for McLaren.

The move, which takes effect from the 2015 season onwards, revives the successful McLaren Honda partnership that originally began in 1988 and ran for five years. Not a particularly long period then, but the collaboration did produce four drivers’ and four constructors’ championships.

To put that achievement into perspective, McLaren’s current relationship with Mercedes-Benz is in its eighteenth year, yet so far it has yielded just three drivers’ and one constructors’ titles (with bleak prospect of adding to that tally).

The Honda-powered McLaren MP4/5 that competed in 1989.

As per the revised technical rules that come into force next year, Honda will be responsible for developing a 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged engine together with its associated kinetic energy recovery system.

In a statement, Takanobu Ito, President and CEO of Honda, said: “Ever since its establishment, Honda has been a company which grows by taking on challenges in racing.

“Honda has a long history of advancing our technologies and nurturing our people by participating in the world’s most prestigious automobile racing series. The new F1 regulations with their significant environmental focus will inspire even greater development of our own advanced technologies and this is central to our participation in F1.”

Following the launch of the new VF Commodore earlier this year, Holden has revealed a revised version of the longer-wheelbase Caprice.

The alterations might be difficult to spot from the outside though, as the styling appears to be virtually unchanged. But it’s a different story on the inside, where the cabin has been completely revamped and now incorporates the VF Commodore’s updated dashboard.

Mitsubishi to enter 2013 Pikes Peak

Mitsubishi has confirmed its plans to compete in next month’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a pair of electric-powered MiEV Evolution II prototypes.

In 2012 an i-MiEV Evolution driven by Hiroshi Masuoka took second place in the event’s Electric class, a very creditable result considering it was Mitsubishi’s first attempt. However, the time recorded was just over fifteen seconds behind the winner, Fumio Nutahara in his Radical-based Toyota Motorsport TMG EVP002.

Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution II 2013 Front Side

So, for this year the team’s sole objective is to overhaul the competition and take victory. To help achieve that goal, the four-wheel drive MiEV Evolution II features several enhancements compared to the original version.

Key among them is the motor count, which is up from three to four. Their combined output of 536 bhp (400 kW / 544 PS) is now governed via an S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) vehicle dynamics system, while energy is supplied by an under-floor 50 kWh battery pack.

To complement the extra power, the car’s carbon fibre, single-seat bodywork has been completely redesigned to both reduce weight and improve the aerodynamics.

Once again, Hiroshi Masuoka is going to be driving one of the Mitsubishis. Behind the wheel of the other will be Greg Tracy, who has previously enjoyed Pikes Peak successes on two wheels.
