BMW teams up with Dainese

0
0
BMW Motorrad has revealed plans to introduce a range of airbag-equipped rider clothing. Developed in conjunction with Dainese, the garments will be based on the Italian firm’s D-air protection system.

The first BMW product is going to be the DoubleR RaceAir one-piece leather suit. Meant for circuit use only, its public debut is scheduled for this November’s EICMA show in Milan.

BMW DoubleR RaceAir (Rendering)

Like the similar Dainese-branded version that went on sale in 2011, the DoubleR RaceAir is expected to use an internal sensor to trigger its airbag. Such a standalone approach means no extra components are required and there’s no physical connection to the motorcycle.

Road riders (and their pillion passengers) are being made to wait a bit longer though, as a BMW adaptation of Dainese’s existing D-air Street system isn’t due until 2015.

The current D-air Street uses bike-mounted accelerometers and a fall sensor that are connected to a control unit, which can then activate the clothing’s airbag(s) via a two-way radio link. Compared to the race suit it’s a slightly more complex set-up, but retrofitting will be possible.

Nissan Qashqai registrations in the UK totalled 45,675 last year, a figure that made it the country’s most popular crossover. Suzuki will doubtless be hoping to emulate some of the Sunderland-built model’s success with its all-new SX4 S-Cross, which goes on sale in October.

Available with a choice of 1.6 litre petrol or diesel engines, manual or continuously variable transmissions and four trim grades, the Suzuki’s cause should be helped by some aggressive pricing.

The entry-level SZ3 version, for example, is going to cost £14,999. That makes it £1,896 less than the cheapest Qashqai, a significant difference.

Mini goes camping

0

Mini has unveiled three different concepts that should appeal to those who like the idea of spending the night with their car.

First up is a two-berth teardrop caravan called the Cowley. Named after the Oxford suburb where the Mini plant is located (not a popular camping destination, incidentally), it appears to be a rebranded version of the Camp-Runner Alpina. Among the Cowley’s features are a solar charger for the onboard 230v electrical system, as well as a rear-mounted kitchenette complete with sink, stove and fridge.

Next is the Camper, which is a modified Clubvan. Although just a single bed is squeezed in, its specification nevertheless includes a slide-out kitchen unit with a fridge and propane stove. There’s even a handheld shower that’s fed from an under-floor tank. The diminutive Clubvan Camper might be an interesting vehicle, but one potential rival - the Citroën Nemo-based Romahome R10 - is a more comprehensive conversion.

Finally, the Countryman All4 Camp uses a roof-top tent to provide accommodation for two people. When needed the upper half simply pops up to create a sleeping space, with access via a side-mounted ladder. However, when retracted it does look like an old mattress is being carted off to the rubbish dump.

While the trio all seem production-ready, Mini is saying there are currently no plans to offer them for sale.

Dacia Duster Black Edition

0

There are two things wrong with the new Dacia Duster Black Edition: firstly, Dacia has resorted to including ‘black’ in its name, which is now getting really hackneyed and just shows a lack of imagination; secondly, the price is way too expensive.

Dacia’s main selling point is it’s a budget brand. That ethos is borne out extremely well by the £11,595 Duster Ambiance dCi 110 4x2, a mid-range model that forms the basis of the Black Edition.

Dacia Duster Black Edition (2013) Front Side

The Black Edition’s generous extra specification includes 18” alloy wheels, a brushed black vinyl bodywork wrap, leather upholstery and a Kenwood media system that incorporates a 6” screen, satellite navigation, a DAB radio and a DVD player.

However, all of the extra equipment takes the cost up to a staggering £17,575, which is over 50% more than the Ambiance version.

That figure also pitches the Black Edition against some very talented rivals, for example the Nissan Qashqai and Škoda Yeti. Admittedly a similar amount only buys those competitors’ entry-level variants, but nevertheless they probably offer a better long-term ownership experience.

Renault has set a price for its new limited edition Mégane Renaultsport Red Bull Racing RB8.

The Formula One-inspired model will cost £28,245 in the UK, a figure that makes it £2,700 more expensive than a regular Mégane Renaultsport 265 Cup.

Renault Mégane Renaultsport Red Bull Racing RB8 (2013) Front Side

That premium buys a unique Twilight Blue paint finish, various Red Bull logos and a set of two-tone 19” alloy wheels. The interior meanwhile features part-leather upholstery and Recaro front seats.

Also included in the specification is the R-Link R.S. Monitor Pack, which is usually a £900 option. A multimedia system, it consists of a 7” colour touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite navigation and the Renaultsport Monitor that tracks performance. Data can even be downloaded onto a USB memory stick, so drivers can share their stats with friends and family (i.e. bore them rigid).

Anyone interested in the RB8 should probably contact a Renault dealer without delay, as just thirty examples have been allocated to the UK.

Seat Leon ST revealed

Seat seems to be using decent design as a means to give its brand a better sense of identity. The new estate version of the Leon, which carries the name Sport Tourer, is further evidence of that strategy.

Like the existing five-door and three-door SC models, the ST is an eye-catching car. It should be fairly practical too, as the cargo volume is 587 litres with the rear seats up, or 1,470 litres with them folded flat. The front passenger seat backrest can also be flipped forward to accommodate very long loads.

Seat Leon ST (2014) Rear Side

Powering the ST is the same range of engines already offered in the other Leon models. That means a choice of petrol or diesel, with capacities ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 litres. All come with stop-start and brake energy recovery systems as standard for improved efficiency.

Coinciding with the arrival of the ST is the introduction of some extra options across the Leon range. These include adaptive cruise control, as well as adaptive damper chassis control and progressive steering for the high performance FR variants.

The Leon ST is due to make its public debut at this September’s IAA show in Frankfurt.

BMW Motorrad has announced that its factory participation in the FIM Superbike World Championship will cease from the end of the 2013 season.

In a statement explaining the move, Stephen Schaller, General Director of BMW Motorrad said: “BMW Motorrad Motorsport will end its involvement in the World Superbike Championship after this season.

“This is consistent with the strategic realignment of our brand. BMW Motorrad will now focus on the further expansion of the very successful product portfolio over 500 cc, the expansion of product segments under 500 cc, e-mobility and the development of market potential in emerging economies like Brazil and Asia. Only those who act consistently today are well prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.

“BMW Motorrad will remain involved in motorsport and in doing so we will focus on the international customer sport in all its facets. I want to thank everybody who has supported us on this long and successful journey.”

Details of the ‘international customer sport’ activities have yet to be confirmed, but they could include supporting privateer outfits that wish to run the BMW S 1000 RR in World Superbikes.

Citroën C-Elysée WTCC revealed

Citroën has previewed the car that Sébastien Loeb will be driving in the 2014 World Touring Car Championship.

The contender is based on the new C-Elysée four-door saloon, which won’t be available as a road-going model across much of Europe. So, on the face of it, Citroën has made an odd choice.

Citroën C-Elysée WTCC 2014 (Rendering) Front Side

However, using the C-Elysée actually makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective because it (along with the virtually identical Peugeot 301) has been designed primarily for emerging markets such as Russia and China. And those two countries currently host rounds of the WTCC...

As per the FIA’s latest regulations, the racing C-Elysée features dramatically widened wheel arches, 18” wheels, a front splitter and a boot-mounted rear wing. Power comes from a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, which sends its estimated 380 bhp (283 kW / 385 PS) to the front wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission.

Indeed, the wet weight is quoted as being just 98 kg (216 lbs), which is only a few kilos heavier than Yamaha’s own 49 cc Neo’s 4. Furthermore, the D’elight’s seat height is a very manageable 755 mm (29.7”).

Included in the specification are a front disc brake, three-spoke alloy wheels and an underseat storage compartment. Renault introduces the Mégane Knight

Unlike many limited editions, the new Renault Mégane Knight actually appears to be a tempting proposition.

Based on the entry-level Expression+ trim grade, the Knight’s extra equipment includes rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, 16” ‘Eptius’ alloy wheels and electrically folding door mirrors. Rear privacy glass, dark chrome exterior trim and sports-styled bumpers borrowed from the GT Line variant complete the package.

Renault Mégane Knight Hatch (2013) Front Side

Available in Hatch, Coupé and Sport Tourer guises, buyers get a choice of either a 1.6 litre petrol or a 1.5 litre turbodiesel engine. Both produce 108 bhp (81 kW / 110 PS), but the latter option demonstrates its superior efficiency by achieving 80.7 mpg (3.5 l/100km) on the combined cycle while emitting just 90 g/km of carbon dioxide.

Undoubtedly one of the best things about the Mégane Knight editions is their prices. Ranging from £17,095 to £20,595, they are only £350 more than the equivalent Expression+ models. To put that into perspective, the rear parking sensors alone are usually a £315 cost option.

Astra VXR upgraded by Superchips

0
0
If the 276 bhp (206 kW / 280 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb/ft) of torque produced by the Vauxhall Astra VXR isn’t enough, aftermarket ECU specialists Superchips could have the answer.

Its Stage 1 remap for the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine lifts those figures by 23 bhp (17 kW / 23 PS) and 61 Nm (45 lb/ft) respectively. No performance stats have been released, but the company is claiming an improved throttle response across the entire rev range.

Go for the DIY fitting option and the cost is £455 including VAT. That method uses a ‘Bluefin’ plug-in handset, which conveniently stores the original settings in case they need to be reinstated. Alternatively, one of the country’s 80 appointed dealers can do the installation for £365 including VAT.

Vauxhall Astra VXR (2012) Front Side

A Stage 2 remap is also available, designed for cars fitted with a free-flow exhaust system and sports catalytic converter from Superchips’ partner firm Thorney Motorsport. Power rises by 32 bhp (23 kW / 32 PS) while torque increases by 75 Nm (55 lb/ft), but again the effects on acceleration and top speed are unknown. Pricing is the same as the Stage 1 conversion.

Jaguar XKR-S GT available in the UK

0
0
When it was first revealed at the New York International Auto Show back in March, Jaguar said production of its XKR-S GT would be limited to just 30 units with sales restricted to North America.

Now though that somewhat draconian policy has been relaxed a little, because ten examples are also being offered to customers in the UK.

Jaguar XKR-S GT Coupé (2014) Front Side
2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT. Scroll down for more images.

The price has been set at £135,000 on the road, making the GT version £37,535 more expensive than a regular XKR-S Coupé. So what will buyers get for that premium?

Well not an engine upgrade, as the XKR-S GT uses the same 542 bhp (405 kW / 550 PS) supercharged 5.0 litre V8 that powers the normal XKR-S. However, an enhanced aerodynamics package and a recalibrated traction control system mean the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time is reduced from 4.2 to 3.9 seconds. Top speed remains electronically-limited to 186 mph (300 km/h).

Perhaps the most significant change is a track-focussed suspension set-up that features height-adjustable adaptive dampers. It’s complemented by lightweight 20” forged alloy wheels and carbon ceramic disc brakes with monobloc calipers.

Deliveries of the Jaguar XKR-S GT are expected to begin this October.
