Its two drivers - as yet unnamed - will initially use the Spark-Renault SRT-01E, but Venturi plans on becoming a constructor for the second season.

Hyundai Intrado concept teased

0
0
The star exhibit from Hyundai at next March’s Geneva International Motor Show is set to be the new Intrado concept.

Its bodywork represents Hyundai’s latest ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design language, but styling isn’t the Intrado’s most noteworthy aspect.

More interesting is the car’s radical underpinnings. Although Hyundai isn’t giving too much away, it has said that ‘Intrado is built around a super-lightweight structure made from a mixture of advanced materials and joined using a revolutionary technique that has the potential to change the way cars are constructed in the future’. A bold claim, then.

Just as innovative is the powertrain, which is a latest-generation hydrogen fuel cell. Significantly, it’s claimed to be both smaller and lighter than the one used in the production ix35 Fuel Cell.

2014 Hyundai i20 WRC revealed

Hyundai Motorsport has shown off the 2014 livery for its new i20 WRC.

With Shell as title sponsor the cars feature a striking red and greyish-blue colour scheme. Also prominent are numerous ‘N’ logos, the symbol for Hyundai’s just-announced high performance sub-brand. That name, which is taken from the Namyang research and development centre, is due to appear on future showroom models as well.

Hyundai i20 WRC 2014 Front

The i20 WRC makes its World Rally Championship debut in next month’s Rallye Monte Carlo. Thierry Neuville has been named as the team’s lead driver, while Juho Hänninen, Dani Sordo and Chris Atkinson will each do selected events in the second car.

Commenting on expectations for this season, Michel Nandan, Team Principal of Hyundai Motorsport, said: “We have worked tremendously hard to get where we are today and to be able to launch our new WRC team to the world.

“In less than one year, we have built and tested a brand new WRC-specification car and established a professional team and modern motorsport facility. It’s a huge accomplishment but we know that we have a lot to learn in our first season.

“Our aims for 2014 are realistic: we want to finish each rally with both cars and build up a database of information and experience so we can develop ourselves into prospective rally winners in the future. If all goes well, we will hope to be competing for occasional podiums as the year progresses.”

2014 NACTOY finalists

The finalists for the 2014 North American Car of the Year and 2014 North American Truck / Utility of the Year awards have been announced.

From a shortlist of twelve models, a jury of forty-eight automotive journalists from Canada and the United States chose the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Mazda 3 to be the three car finalists. While the Chevrolet’s selection was fairly predictable, the Mazda’s presence is rather surprising given some of the other contenders.

GM to end manufacturing in Australia

0
0
General Motors has announced that its vehicle and engine manufacturing operations in Australia will cease by the end of 2017. Engineering activities are also going to be cut back, although the intention is to keep a design studio open.

Exchange rate issues, high production costs and a small competitive domestic market have all been cited as reasons for the decision. Its immediate impact is around 2,900 job losses over the next four years.

However, this doesn’t mean the end of Holden. Sales, service, warranty support and parts availability will continue via the brand’s dealer networks in Australia and New Zealand.

What’s less certain is the future of Holden’s VF Commodore. The rear-wheel drive model range, which is also sold as the Chevrolet SS and Vauxhall VXR8, is only assembled in Australia.

Given Ford’s factory closure statement last May and the Australian government’s reluctance to carry on subsidising the motor industry, GM’s move wasn’t unexpected. It will leave Toyota as the sole car builder in Australia, but for how much longer?

£385 Honda CG110 launched

0
0
A proper Honda motorcycle for £385 or €455 sounds like a real bargain. The bike in question is the new CG110, but there are a couple of catches.

Firstly, availability is currently restricted to Nigeria, which is where Honda builds the thing. A price tag there of around 100,000 naira should help achieve an annual sales forecast of 40,000 units. Don’t expect the CG110 to be exported to Europe, though.

Secondly, it’s a very basic machine. Although technical details haven’t been released, the specification appears to include an air-cooled engine, a kick-starter, simple suspension, drum brakes and dated styling. However none of that matters, because the point of the CG110 is to provide its target audience with affordable, reliable mobility.

BMW Z4 Pure Fusion Design package

The new Pure Function Design option has been created to give the interior of BMW’s Z4 roadster a more luxurious ambience.

It might not be particularly practical, though. That’s because the sports seats, door panels, armrests and lower sections of the dashboard are all upholstered in ivory white Nappa leather.

Contrast is provided by the use of Fineline wood trim and a swathe of saddle brown Nappa leather that runs across the centre of the cockpit. A black leather covering for the dashboard top, instrument binnacle and window sills completes the makeover.

As well as the regular range of colours, Z4 Pure Fusion Design buyers will also be able to order an exclusive paint shade called Sparkling Brown metallic. Judging by the images, it looks a lot better than it sounds and complements the cabin nicely.

BMW X1 gets a mild update for 2014

Few people would describe the BMW X1 as particularly handsome, especially when it’s viewed from the front.

The changes being introduced for the 2014 model year probably aren’t going to alter that, mainly because they’re limited to revised front bumper air intake vents, redesigned alloy wheels and the addition of daytime running lights.

Top 10: 2014 BMW M3 and M4 essentials

0
0
A new BMW M3 is always a special event. However, the fifth-generation model’s arrival is made more exciting because it’s being joined by the first ever M4.

To mark the occasion, here are ten key things to know about the latest M cars:

1. Two body styles are available (for now)

Buyers can choose from either the 4 Series-based M4 Coupé or the slightly more practical four-door M3 Saloon. An M4 Convertible is expected later next year, but BMW should extend the range even further. Rapid estate cars have a definite cachet, so an M3 Touring would be a great alternative to the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Estate and the Audi RS 4 Avant.

...and the 2014 BMW M4 Coupé.
Scroll down for more images.

2. The styling is subtle yet distinctive

Their redesigned bumpers, flared wheel arches, side gills, unique door mirrors and rear spoilers aren’t only there to make the M3 and M4 appear more purposeful. Rather, the bodywork changes have been introduced to help cooling, improve the aerodynamics and provide additional downforce on both axles.

On the inside, special low-set seats with extra lateral support are fitted. Those in the front are heated and electrically-adjustable.

3. Lightweight materials abound

Compared to the previous M3, mass is down by 80 kg (176 lbs) thanks to various weight-saving measures. These include the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the roof panel, driveshaft, engine bay strut brace and the M4’s boot lid.

And then there are the suspension components, front wings and bonnet, all of which are made from aluminium instead of the usual steel. Even the oil sump is magnesium.

4. Power no longer comes from a V8 engine

Both the M3 and M4 feature the same 3.0 litre straight-six engine that has two intercooled mono-scroll turbochargers. Although the shift away from normal aspiration is a major break with tradition, it doesn’t come as a surprise.

It’s an effective arrangement nevertheless, because the motor produces 425 bhp (317 kW / 431 PS) with 550 Nm (405 lb/ft) of peak torque that’s available from 1,850 rpm.

5. Two transmissions are offered

The M3 and M4 come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, an increasing rarity in performance cars nowadays. To ensure smooth down-changes, it boasts a throttle-blipping function.

As an alternative, a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) is on the options list. Launch control is included as part of the package, plus the gear-change characteristics can be varied via the Drivelogic system.

6. Performance is better than the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG and Audi RS 4

The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 4.3 seconds, a figure that reduces to 4.1 seconds with M DCT. Regardless of the transmission type, top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

By comparison, the C 63 AMG Saloon and RS 4 Avant take 4.5 and 4.7 seconds respectively to reach 62 mph. Their top speeds are similarly restricted to 155 mph, though.

7. Efficiency is improved

Combined cycle fuel economy is 32.1 mpg (8.8 l/100km) while carbon dioxide emissions are 204 g/km. Specify M DCT and those values become 34.0 mpg (8.3 l/100km) and 194 g/km. Overall, BMW reckons the M3 and M4 are 25% greener than their predecessors.

8. There are numerous chassis upgrades

Naturally, the M3 and M4 are rear-wheel drive. To minimise wheel spin and maximise traction, an electronically-controlled Active M Differential is present that works in conjunction with the Dynamic Stability Control system.

Furthermore, the standard spec of UK market cars is enhanced by 19” forged alloy wheels and Adaptive M suspension that lets the driver select Comfort, Sport or Sport+ modes.

To match the extra performance, lightweight M Compound brakes promise better feel and less fade. If they aren’t deemed effective enough, then M Carbon ceramic replacements are a cost option.

9. UK prices have been confirmed

The M3 Saloon costs £56,175 and the M4 Coupé is £56,635 on the road.

10. Sales begin in 2014

In the UK, the first deliveries are due to take place on the 21st of June 2014.

ABT creates a 700 horsepower Audi RS 7

0
0
With 552 bhp (412 kW / 560 PS), the standard specification Audi RS 7 Sportback isn’t lacking in power. But that hasn’t stopped German tuning firm ABT Sportsline from launching an upgrade programme for the car.

The focus has been on the RS 7’s 4.0 litre biturbo V8 engine. Changes to its engine management system see output increasing to 656 bhp (490 kW / 666 PS), while peak torque rises from 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) to 830 Nm (612 lb/ft).

Audi RS 7 Sportback (ABT Sportsline) (2013) Front Side

As a result, the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time drops by 0.3 to 3.6 seconds and the electronic speed limiter kicks in at 186 mph (300 km/h) instead of the usual 155 mph (250 km/h). In Germany the price (excluding fitting) is €6,909, or roughly £5,770 at current exchange rates.

However, if that’s not quite enough, further mapping tweaks and the addition of ABT’s stainless steel exhaust system give 690 bhp (515 kW / 700 PS) with 880 Nm (649 lb/ft). That’s sufficient to propel the RS 7 from rest to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, before taking it to a top speed of 198 mph (320 km/h). For the extra performance buyers will have to part with €11,809, which is about £9,860.

Audi RS 7 Sportback (ABT Sportsline) (2013) Rear Side

To complete the package ABT also offers a carbon fibre rear spoiler, 20” or 21” alloy wheels and various accessories for the interior.

Measuring 4.70 metres (15’ 5”) from bumper to bumper, the DS 5LS is 17 centimetres (7”) longer than the European-spec DS5. A four-door saloon, its restrained styling incorporates the latest DS front end, LED taillights and plenty of chrome trim.

Sales of the 5LS are due to begin in China next March via fifty special DS Stores. Citroën has also confirmed that a DS SUV is going to be launched there later in 2014.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Edition 30

2014 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Jetta GLI’s launch in the United States. To mark the occasion, Volkswagen has created a couple of special versions fittingly called the Edition 30 and Edition 30 with Navigation.

In addition to the usual performance-orientated GLI specification, both feature a red trim strip along the bottom of their grilles, larger 18” ‘Laguna’ alloy wheels and a boot lid spoiler.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI Edition 30 (2014) Front Side

On the inside, the sports seats are upholstered in V-Tex leatherette with red accents. The Edition 30 specification also includes carbon-effect trim pieces, lots of red stitching, floor mats and unique doorsill plates.

Mechanically things are unchanged, which means power comes from a four-cylinder, turbocharged, 2.0 litre engine that produces 210 bhp (156 kW / 212 PS). Buyers can opt for either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Jetta GLI Edition 30 models go on sale early next year in the United States. Prices have yet to be confirmed.

Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 first view

The all-new Lamborghini Huracán is named after a fighting bull. That’s rather fitting because, as a replacement for the Gallardo, it’s going to have to take on the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren 12C.

Powering the LP 610-4 version is a revised 5.2 litre V10 engine. Unusually fitted with both direct and indirect injection systems, it produces 601 bhp (448 kW / 610 PS) with 560 Nm (413 lb/ft) of torque. That output is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 (2014) Front Side

Thanks partly to a carbon fibre and aluminium chassis which keeps the dry weight down to 1,422 kg (3,135 lbs), the 0-62mph (100 km/h) time is 3.2 seconds. A definitive top speed hasn’t been quoted yet, but Lamborghini says it’ll be in excess of 202 mph (325 km/h).

Despite that performance, Lamborghini is keen to stress the Huracán’s ‘easy-to-drive road behaviour’. Strada, Sport and Corsa user-selectable modes affect the powertrain, transmission and stability control settings.

Private preview events are scheduled for next month, ahead of the Huracán’s public debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March. The first customer deliveries are then expected to follow soon after.
