Jaguar F-Pace official 'spy shots' released

$

Times must be hard for those photographers who lurk outside car development centres, hoping to grab a blurry shot of the latest disguised prototype. Their role is increasingly being assumed by the manufacturers as part of tightly-controlled new-model teaser campaigns.

Jaguar, for example, has just issued some images of the upcoming F-Pace being tested in icy Sweden and sweltering Dubai. They come after the all-wheel drive crossover's first public appearance earlier this month, when one was used as a support vehicle for Team Sky in the Tour de France.

The production F-Pace will make its debut at September's Frankfurt International Motor Show. Sales are then due to begin in 2016.

Toyota expands the Yaris Hybrid line-up

With an increasing number of car buyers realising that diesel might not be suitable for them, Toyota’s decision to add the Active and Sport trim grades to its Yaris Hybrid range could be timely.

Available now, the two new arrivals are being offered in five-door guise only.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid Sport (2015) Front Side

Their hybrid powertrain combines a 1.5 litre petrol engine, an electric motor, a nickel-metal hydride battery pack and a continuously variable transmission.

On the combined cycle, the Active version achieves 85.6 mpg (3.3 l/100km) while emitting 75 g/km of carbon dioxide. Larger 16” alloy wheels mean those figures become 78.5 mpg (3.6 l/100km) and 82 g/km for the Sport model.

Active prices start from £15,295, although Toyota is currently knocking £300 off that amount. Its specification is fairly sparse, but dual-zone air conditioning, heated door mirrors, remote central locking, electric front windows and seven airbags do come as standard.

The Sport, which costs £16,695, is much more lavish. A reversing camera, LED daytime running lights, LED rear light clusters, privacy glass, a rear spoiler and a black finish for the rear pillars all appear on the equipment list. Furthermore, a touchscreen-based multimedia system incorporating Bluetooth and a DAB radio is also fitted.

Chevrolet has announced that the new Colorado Z71 Trail Boss and Midnight Edition are due to arrive at dealers later this year.

Like its predecessor, the 2016 Z71 Trail Boss is aimed at off-road users. The package’s key feature is a set of black 17” wheels shod with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTec all-terrain tyres. Also fitted are extended arches, tubular side steps, a spray-on bedliner and a sport bar with LED lights.

The Midnight Edition, which is based on the existing LT trim grade, provides a blacked-out look. This familiar theme sees the 18” wheels, front grille, bowtie badges and soft tonneau cover all gain a black finish. Naturally, black is the only paintwork option.

Chevrolet Colorado LT Midnight Edition Crew Cab (2016 North American Spec) Front Side

Both special models are being offered in extended cab and crew cab guises. The usual powertrain line-up applies, so customers are going to have a choice of 2.8 litre Duramax turbo diesel, 2.5 litre I4 gasoline or 3.6 litre V6 gasoline engines. They’ll also get to specify either two- or four-wheel drive.

Prices have yet to be announced.

Affluent audiophiles are going to be tempted by the latest Rolls-Royce Wraith special edition. Called ‘Inspired by Music’, it features a 1300W, eighteen-channel Bespoke Audio system that apparently took two years to perfect.

Audi S8 Plus launched

As its name suggests, the new Audi S8 Plus takes the regular S8 and adds some more performance.

Key to achieving that is an upgraded 4.0 litre V8 bi-turbo petrol engine. Power has been substantially increased from 512 bhp (382 kW / 520 PS) to 596 bhp (445 kW / 605 PS), while peak torque rises to 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) or 750 Nm (553 lb/ft) on overboost.

Audi S8 Plus (2016) Front Side

Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system, the result is a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 3.8 seconds.

Despite the extra output, top speed remains electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). However, the optional Dynamic Package (which also includes carbon-ceramic brakes) sees that figure lifted to 189 mph (305 km/h).

To provide some visual differentiation, the Plus version features a set of 21” alloy wheels, darkened taillight clusters, black bodywork trim and a carbon fibre front spoiler lip.

Recalibrated air suspension, a sports exhaust, power door closing, privacy glass and adaptive cruise control are part of the standard specification too.

Audi dealers will start accepting S8 Plus orders in October, ahead of the first deliveries in early 2016. Buyers should expect to pay quite a hefty premium, though. The UK on-the-road price is £97,700, which is £16,965 more than a regular S8 costs.

BMW M6 GT3 price confirmed

Customer racing teams will be able to place orders for the new M6 GT3 from the middle of next month, BMW Motorsport has announced.

In Europe each is going to cost €379,000, which is around £264,800 at current exchange rates. Prices for North American markets have yet to be revealed.

BMW M6 GT3 2016 Front Side

Just as importantly, the M6 GT3 should be cheaper to run than the car it replaces, the Z4 GT3. For example, BMW reckons spare parts are set to offer better value for money, plus the 577 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS) 4.4 litre V8 powertrain will yield operating savings of up to 30 per cent.

Commenting on the project’s progress, BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said: “We remain completely on schedule with the development of our new figurehead on the GT racing scene. The basic work of the past few months is now followed by a period of fine-tuning. After all, our approach is to provide our customers with a competitive car from the word go.”

The undisguised M6 GT3 is due to make its public debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.

Manufacturers know that personalisation options can help to shift a few extra units, especially if the model in question is seen as quirky or trendy.

Doubtless Fiat will be hoping such a strategy is going to work for its 500X, because Mopar has just introduced an accessory range for the small crossover.

The selection comprises over 100 items. All can be bought separately, or alternatively eight better-value Xtra Packs have been created.

For example the beige, bronze, red and white Colour Xtra Packs comprise matching door mirror caps, body stripes and door moulding inserts. They cost £305, which is a £100 saving compared to ordering the parts individually. Black and Chrome Xtra Packs are available too.

Fiat 500X With Mopar Accessories (2015) Side

Roof bars and a moulded cargo area tray are the key features of the Summer and Winter Xtra Packs. The former adds a bike carrier, while the latter comes with adaptors to accommodate snowboards or skis.

Among the other components being offered are 18” wheels in various designs (from £816 per set of four), a 360-litre roof box (£259), a detachable tow bar (£360) and a tow bar-mounted two-bike carrier (£613).

Volkswagen marks forty years of the Polo

In 1975, Volkswagen decided to start making a more basic version of the Audi 50. It was called Polo, a nameplate which of course is still with us today.

Over five generations Polo has become much more sophisticated and refined. That’s borne out by the Polo Original, a “limited premium special edition model for demanding customers” created to celebrate the car’s 40th birthday.

Identifying features comprise a set of 16” ‘Portago’ alloy wheels, LED headlights, darkened taillight clusters, body-colour door mirror caps and a gloss black grille. Unique ‘Original’ badges and doorsill kick plates are also fitted.

Volkswagen Polo Original 5-Door (2015) Front Side

Inside there’s a distinctly retro feel. The seats are covered in faux leather with black and orange tartan inserts, plus some of the trim pieces are body-coloured.

Numerous items on the standard equipment list would have been inconceivable to buyers of the very first Polo. These include a rear reversing camera, climate control and the Front Assist traffic monitoring system.

Available only in Germany, production of the Polo Original is being limited to 1,000 units.

Prices start from €19,950. Volkswagen reckons that amount represents a customer saving of €1,119, given the extra specification.

Nissan delays its WEC return

Innovation in motorsport can be a very risky strategy. Nissan has discovered this with its novel GT-R LM Nismo, which features both a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive.

Unfortunately, the LMP1 contender had a disastrous race debut at June’s Le Mans 24 Hours.

The #21 and #23 cars simply didn’t finish. The #22 entry driven by Harry Tincknell, Alex Buncombe and Michael Krumm was still running at the end, but it wasn’t classified because 70% of the winner’s distance wasn’t completed.

Nissan GT-R LM Nismo LMP1 2015 Front Side 2Nissan GT-R LM Nismo LMP1 2015 Side

Many of the issues experienced were due to problems with the energy recovery system, a key component of the hybrid drivetrain. Consequently, power was significantly down and numerous other elements were affected.

The original plan had been to run the GT-R LM Nismo in all eight rounds of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship. Later, that was revised to just Le Mans plus the subsequent five events.

Now, Nissan has confirmed that further participation in the series is being postponed until the car’s numerous technical difficulties are resolved.

Hopefully the GT-R LM Nismo will compete again this season. However, despite remaining fully committed to the project, Nissan has not yet named a date for its return.

Lotus Motorsport has created the Exige 360 Cup, which is essentially a lighter, slightly more powerful version of the Exige V6 Cup.

As its name suggests, output from the supercharged 3.5 litre V6 engine has been increased by 10 bhp (7 kW / 10 PS) to 355 bhp (265 kW / 360 PS) courtesy of a revised induction system and a sports exhaust.

Weight meanwhile is down to 1,130 kg (2,491 lbs), thanks to a new front access panel and a louvred tailgate. Along with the roof, they feature a distinctive matt back finish.

As well as adjustable suspension, launch control and four driving modes, the 360 Cup's standard specification includes red five-spoke wheels and upgraded grooved brake discs.

There's an extensive options list, too. Among the items on it are Öhlins race dampers, adjustable anti-roll bars, a removable steering wheel and carbon fibre race seats.

Just fifty examples of the Exige 360 Cup are going to be produced. Prices start at £62,995 and customers will have a choice of black, grey, silver or white metallic paintwork.

BMW Concept M4 GTS first view

In the words of BMW, the Concept M4 GTS is “an initial preview of a high-performance model for use on the road and, above all, on the race track.”

Unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the GTS has a number of motorsport-inspired features that set it apart from a regular M4 Coupé.

BMW Concept M4 GTS (2015) Side

For example, the 3.0 litre, straight-six, twin-turbo engine gains water injection. This system cools the intake air, enables a higher boost pressure and allows alterations to the fuel injection timing. The result is claimed to be a significant increase in power and torque, but BMW has yet to release any figures.

The front splitter and prominent rear wing, which are both made from carbon fibre, are manually adjustable. That means the car’s aerodynamic balance can be fine-tuned, even if most track day enthusiasts probably won’t have a clue what they’re doing.

Other changes include a larger front air intake and an upgraded cooling setup. To save weight, the bonnet is made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, plus multi-spoke forged alloy wheels (19” at the front, 20” at the rear) are fitted.

Completing the transformation are some fancy rear light clusters. These use organic light-emitting diodes, rather than plain LEDs.

Subaru Levorg UK pricing confirmed

$

Buying a Subaru Levorg should be a fairly straightforward process. That's because the new estate, which is essentially a replacement for the Legacy Tourer, is being offered in a single version.

Called GT, its specification is fairly generous. The interior features an infotainment system with satellite navigation, a 7” touchscreen, heated front seats, reclining rear seats and leather upholstery.

Subaru Levorg GT (2016) Front Side

On the outside, 18” alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, a roof spoiler and automatically-activated LED headlights with high beam assist all come as standard.

Safety is likely to be a prime consideration for many of the Levorg's target customers. To satisfy them, the equipment list also includes a rear parking camera, blind spot detection, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.

Just one powertrain option likewise keeps things simple. This combines a 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, a Lineartronic continuously-variable transmission and all-wheel drive.

The lack of a diesel alternative might harm sales in this segment, but Subaru says the Levorg can achieve 'nearly' 40 mpg (roughly 7.1 l/100km) on the combined cycle while emitting 164 g/km of carbon dioxide.

Performance is respectable enough too. With 250 Nm (184 lb/ft) of peak torque, the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint is completed in 8.9 seconds. To enhance the handling, active torque vectoring is fitted and there's a choice of two driving modes.

In the UK, the Levorg GT has an on-the-road starting price of £27,495.

2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé unveiled

As expected, the latest generation C-Class family is getting a two-door variant. The new model, which goes on sale in December, resembles a shrunken S-Class Coupé from some angles.

A high beltine, a low roof height, a shallow rear screen angle and a stretched bonnet all contribute to the C-Class Coupé's distinctive proportions. Adding to the looks are a prominent front grille and deep swage lines that run along the flanks. The overall result is striking, if not particularly handsome.

Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupé (2016) Front Side

For a cosmetically sportier appearance, an AMG Line package is also going to be offered. This comes with 18” alloy wheels, revised bumpers, extended side skirts and unique upholstery.

From launch there'll be a selection of four petrol and two diesel engines to choose from. Interestingly all are four-cylinder units, something that might be unacceptable to some customers in some markets.

The available equipment list serves to remind us that the age of semi-autonomous cars is now well and truly here.

Distronic Plus with Steering Assist and Stop+Go Pilot, for example, is an adaptive cruise control system that also keeps the C-Class Coupé within its own lane via automated steering inputs at speeds up to 124 mph (200 km/h). Enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist seems to achieve a similar 'between the lines' function, albeit by braking on one side instead.

To help minimise the chances of a collision with slower or stationary vehicles, Adaptive Brake Assist is able to apply the brakes when necessary with no input from the driver. Furthermore, Brake Assist System Plus monitors crossing traffic and boosts braking effort as required, while the Pre-Safe Brake function is able to detect any stray pedestrians.

Attention Assist, which comes as standard, constantly monitors the driver for signs of inattention or drowsiness. Assuming the C-Class Coupé reaches its destination without crashing – and with every possible safety device fitted, that should be highly likely – then Active Parking Assist can take care of slotting the car into a vacant space.

UK prices for the 2016 C-Class Coupé have yet to be announced.
