Confederate G2 P51 Combat Fighter launched

$

0
Confederate Motorcycles has a reputation for producing stripped-back bikes with uncompromising sculptural looks. Its latest creation, the G2 P51 Combat Fighter, clearly continues the same ethos.

Based on the firm's CX4 architecture, the new G2 boasts a monocoque frame constructed from aerospace-grade billet aluminium. Such an approach maximises rigidity, as does making the intake box, manifold and fuel tank structural elements. Another benefit is a fairly manageable 227 kg (500 lbs) kerb weight.

Confederate G2 P51 Combat Fighter (2015) Front Side

Naturally the all-aluminium air- and oil-cooled engine is a V-twin. With a displacement of 2,160 cc (132 cu. in.), Confederate says it produces 230 Nm (170 lb/ft) of peak torque with 'over' 200 horsepower (around 150 kW). That output is delivered via a five-speed, straight-cut transmission.

Aluminium hasn't been used for the custom-made 19” five-spoke front and 17” solid-disc rear wheels, though. Instead they're both carbon fibre, so they contribute to the G2's high cost.

In Blonde guise – of which just 31 examples will be built – the price in the United States is $113,900 (approximately £73,600 or €100,300 at current exchange rates).

Alternatively, 30 units of the more expensive Black Flag version are being offered at $119,500 (£77,200 / €105,200) each.

As an incentive for any prospective purchasers who might be dithering, orders placed before the 8th of September attract a discount of $10,000 (£6,500 / €8,800).

Nissan has revealed the all-new European-specification NP300 Navara. Compared to its predecessor, comfort and refinement levels are claimed to be much improved, but the pick-up's off-road ability remains.

There's a choice of Double Cab and King Cab versions. Interestingly, the former features a sophisticated five-link rear suspension set-up for better ride and handling, while the latter retains a simpler leaf spring arrangement.

Nissan NP300 Navara Double Cab (2016) Front Side

One diesel engine is being offered in two states of tune. It's a 2.3 litre, four-cylinder unit that produces either 158 bhp (118 kW / 160 PS) or, thanks to twin turbochargers, 187 bhp (140 kW / 190 PS). Transmission options comprise six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearboxes, which can be mated with either two- or four-wheel drive.

The variety of equipment and technology further reflects that Nissan has made an effort to make the 2016 NP300 Navara more car-like. Among the available items are dual-zone climate control, an Around View Monitor, a rear-view reversing camera, LED headlights, keyless entry and Forward Emergency Braking.

UK prices and final trim levels have yet to be announced, but a five-year (or 100,000 mile) manufacturer warranty is going to be standard.

A van-based people carrier might not be an obvious 'sporty makeover' candidate. That hasn't stopped Mercedes-Benz from creating an AMG Line package for the V-Class, though.

It comprises redesigned bumpers, subtly altered sills, a small tailgate spoiler and a set of 19” seven-twin-spoke alloy wheels. Also fitted is a revised suspension set-up that has been lowered by 15 mm (0.6”) and features stiffer springs and dampers.

Inside, a black headlining, brushed aluminium pedals and faux carbon fibre trim provide a suitably different ambiance.

The AMG Line upgrade will be available across all engine and body length combinations. Its arrival at the end of this year is due to coincide with the introduction of some additional options for the V-Class. They include a huge two-section panoramic sunroof and a larger centre console that incorporates a cooler compartment.

Peugeot Sport creates the 308 Racing Cup

Peugeot's new 308 Racing Cup is destined to compete in a single-make series, various national saloon car championships and one-off endurance races.

Power is provided by a 1.6 litre engine which should produce at least 303 bhp (226 kW / 308 PS) courtesy of an upgraded turbocharger taken from the 208 T16 Pikes Peak. That output is delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission.

Peugeot 308 Racing Cup 2017 Side

The suspension is based on the road-going 308's, but the ride height, toe angle and camber have all been made adjustable for track use. Similarly, the braking system gains stronger six-piston calipers.

Visually, the most striking feature is a large rear wing that hangs off the back of the car. It's complemented by a bespoke front splitter, while 18” wheels nestle beneath noticeably widened arches.

Deliveries of the 308 Racing Cup to customer teams are due to begin at the end of 2016. Peugeot hasn't revealed what the price is likely to be, though.

European-spec 2016 Kia Optima revealed

$

It’s unlikely that many examples of the all-new fourth-generation Kia Optima will find buyers in the UK. That has nothing to do with the car’s capabilities, quality or purchase price. Rather, such a prediction is merely a reflection of two interlinked factors.

Firstly, Kia’s D-segment contender can expect to have poorer residuals compared to those of the prestige brands. Consequently, running costs should be relatively higher, which of course is a major consideration (especially for fleet users).

Secondly, customers in this market are extremely badge conscious. That’s one reason why the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is currently the ninth most popular car in the UK, comfortably outselling the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 508 and Vauxhall Insignia.

Kia Optima (2016) Front Side

So, what are people going to miss as they rush past Kia dealers to place their orders at more upmarket showrooms instead?

At 4,855 mm (15’ 11”) long, the four-door Optima is about the same size as a Škoda Superb and slightly larger than a Volkswagen Passat.

Detailed specifications for each European territory have yet to be announced. However, alloy wheels, LED taillight clusters, seven airbags and a separate heater for rear-seat passengers are all confirmed as standard.

Kia Optima (2016) Interior

Also available are smart cruise control, two-mode electronically-adjustable suspension, leather upholstery, a wireless charger for mobile devices, a 360° around-view monitor and a choice of two touchscreen-controlled infotainment and navigation systems.

On the options list is an extensive suite of safety gadgets. This includes a lane-keeping assistant, rear cross traffic alert, blind-spot warning and automated emergency braking that uses both short- and long-range radar.

Unsurprisingly, Kia reckons that most European Optima owners will opt for the 1.7 litre diesel engine. With a variable-geometry turbocharger, it produces an adequate 139 bhp (104 kW / 141 PS) and 340 Nm (250 lb/ft) of peak torque. That output is sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Kia Optima (2016) Rear Side

Alternatively there’s a 160 bhp (120 kW / 163 PS) 2.0 litre petrol unit which can be combined with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Whether or not this particular powertrain makes it to the UK remains to be seen, though.

Looking to the future, Kia is promising plug-in hybrid and high performance variants. Both could well stimulate some extra interest.

Sales of the 2016 Optima are due to begin across Europe during the fourth quarter of this year.

Optionally available are contrasting door mirror caps and two bodywork graphics packages. These can all be ordered individually or in combination.

Ahead of a public debut at next month's Frankfurt International Motor Show, Smart has released the first images of its new fortwo cabrio.

Obviously, the 'tritop' folding roof arrangement is a major difference compared to the existing coupé version. Made of canvas and available in black, blue or red, it can be partially or fully retracted in twelve seconds. Furthermore, the roof bars are removable for a completely open-top look.

Other styling changes include slimmer B-pillars and a slightly altered tridion safety cell. Beneath the skin, reinforcing measures include hot-formed steel tubes in the A-pillars, additional bulkheads and an under-body crossbeam. As a result, Smart says the 2016 fortwo cabrio is around 15 percent torsionally stronger than its predecessor.

The engine line-up comprises normally-aspirated 999 cc and turbocharged 898 cc options that produce 70 bhp (52 kW / 71 PS) and 89 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS) respectively. Both of these three-cylinder units can be specified with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed 'twinamic' automated dual-clutch transmission.

When deliveries of the fortwo cabrio begin in February 2016, buyers will have a choice of passion, prime and proxy trim grades. Prices have yet to be announced.

Fiat has unveiled its rugged-looking Ducato 4x4 Expedition Camper Show Van.

Based on a long-wheelbase, high-roof Ducato with an extended rear overhang, the Expedition Camper should be fairly capable off-road thanks to a four-wheel drive system from Dangel, a raised ride height and some all-terrain tyres. Also fitted are a winch, a front skid-plate and a roof-mounted platform.

The interior, which has been designed by Tecnoform, is intended to be relaxing yet high-tech. Swivelling cab seats help to create a lounge area at the front, while the rear portion accommodates a folding double bed. As well as a side-mounted kitchen unit, the specification also includes two retractable flat-screen televisions and a built-in entertainment system.

Unfortunately, the Ducato 4x4 Expedition Camper isn't destined to become a production model. However, it will be exhibited at upcoming camping and caravanning shows in Düsseldorf, Parma, Le Bourget and Birmingham. At those events, the vehicle is going to be used as a catalyst to gauge customer opinions about Fiat's motorhome activities.

Kia has released some external shots of the all-new Sportage, which is due to be unveiled at September’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.

Compared to the outgoing model, its styling represents a gentle evolution. The side view seems almost identical, for example, even though the wheelbase is slightly longer than before.

Seat updates the Ibiza Cupra for 2016

$

While the 2016 Ibiza Cupra looks virtually identical to its predecessor, there have been some major changes.

They start beneath the bonnet, where a 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine replaces the old 1.4 litre unit. So what’s the effect of that extra displacement?

Well, power is increased from 176 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS) to 189 bhp (141 kW / 192 PS). Arguably more important for mid-range pace is peak torque, which is up by 70 Nm (51 lb/ft) to 320 Nm (236 lb/ft) - a huge 28% rise.

Seat Ibiza Cupra (2016) Front Side

The usual performance benchmarks aren’t much improved, though. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time drops from 6.9 to 6.7 seconds, while top speed climbs slightly from 142 mph (228 km/h) to 146 mph (235 km/h).

Coincidentally, the Volkswagen Polo GTI achieves identical figures. Doubtless an intra-group pecking order means that the Seat can’t be any quicker than its rival from the parent brand…

Other upgrades for the Ibiza Cupra include the introduction of a driving mode selector. Called ‘Cupra Drive Profile’, this allows various elements such as the steering and adaptive suspension to be altered.

Completing the enhancements is a revamped interior. From the driver’s perspective the steering wheel, instrumentation and some dashboard fittings are new. Furthermore, the available infotainment systems now support Apple Car Play and Android Auto for better smartphone integration.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Black Bear Edition (2016) Dashboard

As per every other Wrangler sold in North America, power for the Black Bear Edition is provided by a 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 engine. 2016 Kia Sportage interior revealed

A few days ago, several exterior shots of Kia’s all-new fourth-generation Sportage emerged. Now the first images showing the interior have been released.

They depict a cabin that’s slightly larger than the old model’s, thanks primarily to a wheelbase which has grown by 30 mm (1.2”) to 2,670 mm (8’ 9”). There’s added headroom and legroom for both front and rear occupants, for example, plus luggage capacity is up from 465 litres to 503 litres.

Kia Sportage (2016) Interior

Improved refinement is also claimed. Some of the contributing factors are a stronger bodyshell, modified drivetrain mounts, better soundproofing and redesigned seats with stiffer high-tensile steel frames that isolate vibrations.

The Sportage’s ride and handling have also received attention. Indeed, to take advantage of the enhancements, a sporty GT Line variant will be part of the line-up. It features a tauter suspension set-up, 19” alloy wheels and more responsive rack-mounted electric power steering.

Kia Sportage (2016) Dashboard

Available equipment includes heating for the front and rear seats, power-adjustable front seats and a panoramic sunroof. Technology certainly isn’t lacking, as customers could order a wireless charger, a rear-view parking camera and either a 7” or an 8” colour touchscreen to control navigation and infotainment functions.

Also being offered are numerous safety systems. Among them are blind spot detection with lane change assist, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and radar-controlled autonomous emergency braking.

Kia Sportage (2016) Front Side

Kia has confirmed a range of five engines:
  • 1.6 litre GDI petrol - 130 bhp (97 kW / 132 PS)
  • 1.6 litre T-GDI turbo petrol - 174 bhp (130 kW / 177 PS)
  • 1.7 litre CRDi turbo diesel - 113 bhp (84 kW / 115 PS)
  • 2.0 litre R turbo diesel - 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS)
  • 2.0 litre R turbo diesel - 181 bhp (135 kW / 184 PS)
Variously available with either front- or all-wheel drive, they come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The T-GDI unit can be mated with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission instead, while a conventional automatic transmission is the alternative for the others.

The 2016 Sportage, which will be built in Slovakia, is set to debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show later this month.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet revealed

There hasn’t been a full-size luxury convertible in the Mercedes-Benz range since 1971. However, that situation is about to be rectified by the new S-Class Cabriolet, which will debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show later this month.

Based on the existing S-Class Coupé, it features a three-layer powered soft-top that comes in a choice of beige, black, dark blue or dark red. Opening and closing take around twenty seconds, with operation possible at speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h).

Mercedes-Benz S 500 Cabriolet (2016) Front Side

As a consequence of losing a fixed metal roof, extra bodyshell strengthening and the installation of a pyrotechnic roll-over protection system behind the rear head restraints have been necessary.

Such measures usually mean lots more weight but, remarkably, Mercedes-Benz asserts the Cabriolet is no heavier than the Coupé. That feat has been achieved mainly by avoiding the use of steel for some elements. The luggage compartment bulkhead is made from aluminium and magnesium, for example, while the rear floor section is aluminium.

To keep occupants warm when the roof is down, Thermotronic automatic climate control is fitted and all four seats are heated. Furthermore, Aircap automatic wind protection, Airscarf neck-level heating and even heated armrests are on the options list.

The S 500 Cabriolet is powered by a 4.7 litre V8 engine producing 449 bhp (335 kW / 455 PS) with 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) of peak torque. It’s complemented by a nine-speed automatic transmission and Airmatic semi-active air suspension.

Also being unveiled at Frankfurt is the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4Matic Cabriolet. This performance variant, which boasts a 576 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS) 5.5 litre bi-turbo V8 and rear-biased all-wheel drive, completes the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in just 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Availability of 4Matic is being restricted to left-hand drive markets only, though. AMG models with their steering wheels on the right are getting plain rear-wheel drive instead, but both versions are equipped with a seven-speed Speedshift MCT automatic transmission.

Prices for the 2016 S-Class Cabriolet have yet to be announced.

Citroën's latest concept, the Cactus M, has been heavily influenced by the open-top Méhari utility that first appeared in the late 1960s.

Accordingly, features include plastic doors, body-side footholds to allow passengers to climb into the rear seats, an almost flat windscreen and a complete absence of weather protection.

Citroën Cactus M Concept (2015) Side

Given that the cabin is open to the elements, waterproof neoprene upholstery and a bare floor seem like wise choices. Indeed, strategically placed drain holes mean the cabin can be hosed out if it gets very mucky.

All-wheel drive isn't part of the specification. However, a degree of off-road ability is provided by a raised ride height plus Grip Control, which is designed to maximise traction over rough terrain.

The Cactus M is due to be unveiled at this month's Frankfurt International Motor Show.
