Second-generation Leaf’s slow reveal continues

On the 6th of September, Nissan will unveil its all-new electric Leaf. Until then, info snippets about the car are being divulged via an obligatory teaser campaign.

The latest release is a silhouette shot, which suggests a lower-profile design compared to the current Leaf. According to Nissan, this benefits the aerodynamics, high-speed stability and behaviour in crosswinds. Showroom appeal is likely to improve too if the styling is more attractive.

Some technological advances have also been announced. Among them is ProPILOT, a semi-autonomous driving system that can control acceleration, braking and steering when travelling within a single lane.

Nissan Leaf (2018) Instruments

One genuinely innovative device is called e-Pedal. Although a proper brake pedal is fitted, when e-Pedal is activated the accelerator alone is used to control speed and bring the Leaf to a complete halt. Such a strange arrangement might struggle to win acceptance, but anybody with dodgem car experience should be fine.

Understandably the details that prospective customers really want to know – namely battery capacity, range and recharge times – haven't been disclosed yet.

Volkswagen's range has been without a flagship model since the demise of the Phaeton last year. Now, though, that role is being assumed by the new Arteon.

Dealers have just started accepting orders for this five-door coupé, which replaces the CC. Customers can choose either Elegance or R-Line trim grades.

Volkswagen Arteon Elegance (2018) Front Side

Standard equipment on both variants includes self-levelling LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated front seats and an infotainment system that features an 8” colour touchscreen, navigation with European maps, Bluetooth, a DAB radio and eight speakers.

Furthermore, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, drowsiness detection and pedestrian monitoring all appear on a comprehensive list of driver aids.

At first, the engine selection is being restricted to one TSI petrol and two TDI diesel units. Later on, a couple of additional petrol options will join them.

Arteon deliveries are expected to commence next month.

BMW UK introduces a diesel trade-in incentive

BMW has stolen a march on its rivals by launching an incentive scheme that targets older 'dirty' diesels in the UK.

The company is now offering an additional £2,000 Lower Emissions Allowance when a diesel-powered car that's Euro 4 compliant (or worse) is taken in part-exchange against a new BMW or Mini.

Mini Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (2017) Front Side
BMW and Mini will be hoping that their plug-in hybrid
registrations benefit from the Lower Emissions Allowance.

Naturally, there are various terms and conditions connected with the deal. For starters, the vehicle being traded in – which can be from any manufacturer, incidentally – has to have been owned for at least twelve months.

Customers will receive a “suitable average price” for their current car, which won't automatically be scrapped afterwards. Critics could therefore argue that the extra discount is intended primarily to increase sales volumes, rather than improve the environment.

The BMW or Mini being bought has to emit 130 g/km or less of CO2, according to the NEDC measure.

As well as hybrids such as the 225xe Active Tourer and 330e Saloon, eligible models include the petrol-fuelled 218i Gran Tourer, 320i Saloon, 318i Touring and 520i Saloon. In other words, there's no need to choose another diesel.

BMW's Lower Emissions Allowance is going to be available until the end of 2017.

Volkswagen has announced that its California XXL is going to be unveiled at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf, which opens on the 26th of August.

This new camper concept is based on a medium-wheelbase Crafter. Full specification details have yet to be released, but the modifications include a bespoke high-top roof that appears to feature an extendible piece above the windscreen.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017 Rendering) Front Side 1

The Fiat Ducato is currently the most popular vehicle in this segment, so understandably Volkswagen has adopted an interior layout often used by converters of the Italian van.

Up front, the cab seats swivel to form a dinette with a rear two-person bench. On one side of the middle section there's a fairly rudimentary kitchen where, in the absence of an oven or microwave, cooking facilities are restricted to a twin-burner hob. Situated opposite is a wet room with a shower and toilet.

A longitudinally-mounted double bed is placed at the back. It's unclear whether or not the base can be folded up to allow the transport of bulky items, though.

While the California XXL is just a concept for now, a production version will almost certainly follow.

BMW releases some X2 teaser images

Who'd want to be a spy-shot photographer nowadays? More and more, manufacturers are publishing their own snaps of prototypes and upcoming cars (usually wearing carefully-applied disguises). As a result, hiding in bushes with a camera near a test track or engineering centre is rapidly turning into a futile occupation.

By issuing a few pictures of its X2 in camouflage, BMW has become the tactic's latest exponent.

Infiniti creates the retro-modern Prototype 9

Infiniti didn't exist during the 1940s. Even if it had, a single-seat grand prix racer would've been a very low priority for a Japanese company trying to operate in the immediate post-war period.

Such historical pedantry has been ignored for Prototype 9, which imagines what an Infiniti open-wheel car from that era might have looked like.

Infiniti Prototype 9 (2017) Front

Some aspects definitely fall into the 'old-fashioned' category. They include the steel ladder chassis, hand-beaten bare steel body panels and minimalist cockpit. 19” centre-lock wire-spoke wheels, cross-ply tyres and a leaf spring suspension set-up also contribute to the nostalgic vibe.

By contrast, a pure-electric powertrain offers a vision of the future. Prototype 9 boasts a next-generation motor that sends 160 bhp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 320 Nm (236 lb/ft) of torque to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission.

Infiniti Prototype 9 (2017) Rear Side

With a weight of just 890 kg (1,962 lbs), the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint can be achieved in a creditable time of 5.5 seconds. A 105 mph (170 km/h) top speed is less impressive, though.

Energy comes from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery. Its 30 kWh capacity should allow around twenty minutes of hard track use.

Redesigned bumpers and a bolder grille identify the refreshed Jazz, which is due to arrive at Honda dealers early next year.

The changes aren't just cosmetic though. A 128 bhp (96 kW / 130 PS) 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol engine is joining the existing 100 bhp (75 kW / 102 PS) 1.3 litre i-VTEC petrol unit, but the more powerful option is only going to be available in conjunction with the new Dynamic trim grade.

As well as gloss black 16” alloy wheels, this sporty variant gains a front splitter, side skirts, a rear diffuser and LED headlights. Customers will have a choice of either manual or continuously-variable transmissions.

UK prices for the 2018 Jazz have yet to be announced.

Last year's GT '66 Heritage Edition celebrated Ford's outright win in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, so it's only fitting that 1967's victory is similarly honoured.

The new GT '67 Heritage Edition evokes the GT40 Mk. IV driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt to first place at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Accordingly, the car's colour scheme comprises Race Red gloss paintwork with white stripes and graphics.

Also adding to the special look are silver door mirror caps, red brake calipers and a silver satin clearcoat finish for the 20” forged alloy wheels.

Inside, the seatbelts and contrast stitching are red, while matte carbon fibre covers the door sills and centre console.

Although an exact production volume hasn't been disclosed, Ford is saying that “limited quantities” of the GT '67 Heritage Edition are going to be available. To underline their exclusivity, each example will come with a numbered plaque.

2018 SsangYong Rexton UK specs and prices

$

Ahead of deliveries starting in October, SsangYong has confirmed specifications and prices for the fourth-generation Rexton.

Despite being all new, this D/E-segment SUV retains a separate body that's mounted on a 'Quad-Frame' chassis. Such a construction method – which might seem rather old-fashioned – does have some advantages. Indeed, SsangYong reckons the result is a stronger vehicle, plus other variants can be produced more easily (a pick-up is already confirmed for next year).

SsangYong Rexton (2018) Front Side 2

UK buyers of the five-door Rexton will be able to choose from three different trim grades.

The entry-level EX has keyless entry, seven seats, cloth upholstery, woodgrain cabin embellishments and manual air conditioning. Its infotainment system (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compliant, incidentally) features an 8” screen, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth and a DAB radio.

Also appearing on the standard equipment list are numerous driver assistance devices. These include front and rear parking sensors, high beam assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, traffic sign recognition, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking.

SsangYong Rexton (2018) Dashboard

Moving up to the ELX (available in either five- or seven-seat configurations) adds leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats and automatic dual-zone air conditioning.

For extra comfort, the steering wheel and all the seats are heated. Rear privacy glass, 18” diamond-cut alloy wheels, speed-sensitive power steering and TomTom satellite navigation with a 9.2” HD screen are fitted too.

SsangYong Rexton (2018) Side

Completing the line-up is the five-seat Ultimate. Recognisable by a set of bright-finish 20” alloy wheels, the range-topping Rexton gains high-intensity discharge headlights, a powered tailgate, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and 3D around-view monitoring.

LED mood lighting, quilted Nappa leather and ventilated front seats enhance the interior ambience, while memory settings and an easy access mode for the driver's seat improve convenience.

SsangYong Rexton (2018) Interior 2

Every Rexton is powered by a 2.2 litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged e-XDi 220 diesel engine that produces 178 bhp (133 kW / 181 PS) and up to 420 Nm (310 lb/ft) of peak torque.

Six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmissions are being offered. Curiously, the former is paired with five-link rear suspension, but the latter gets a ten-link set-up. Both gearbox options come with part-time four-wheel drive, hill start assist and hill descent control.

SsangYong Rexton (2018) Rear Side

Compared to most premium rivals, purchasing a Rexton is going to involve a considerably lower initial outlay. Potentially higher depreciation rates could significantly affect overall ownership costs, though.

Audi’s new logical (but opaque) nomenclature

$
0
0
Previously, when most engines were normally aspirated and the vast majority ran on petrol, displacement was a simple way of establishing a clear model hierarchy. Even the most casual observer would understand that a 2.0 litre car was inherently superior to its 1.6 litre counterpart, for example.

Things are more complicated nowadays. Different fuel types, widespread turbocharger use and increased availability of hybrid technologies mean that size is no longer key when determining output.

Consequently, the decision by Audi to stop displaying engine capacity designations on its vehicles seems sensible enough. Less well thought out is the new numbering system that'll be appearing instead.

Rather than adopting something straightforward (such as horsepower), two-digit identifiers are going to signify performance levels according to these kilowatt bands:
  • 30– 81-96 kW (108-128 bhp / 110-130 PS)
  • 35– 110-120 kW (147-160 bhp / 150-163 PS)
  • 40– 125-150 kW (167-201 bhp / 170-204 PS)
  • 45– 169-185 kW (226-248 bhp / 230-251 PS)
  • 50– 210-230 kW (281-308 bhp / 285-312 PS)
  • 55– 245-275 kW (328-368 bhp / 333-373 PS)
  • 60– 320-340 kW (429-455 bhp / 435-462 PS)
  • 70– 400+ kW (536+ bhp / 543+ PS)
So, because the next-generation A8 with a 3.0 litre petrol engine has 250 kW, it's being called A8 55 TFSI. Likewise, the 3.0 litre diesel version with 210 kW is getting the A8 50 TDI moniker.

Audi A8 55 TFSI (2018) Rear DetailAudi A8 50 TDI (2018) Rear Detail

All very rational, but there are two obvious flaws. Firstly, the aforementioned 'casual observer' (and indeed many prospective customers) might be confused into thinking that an A8 55 TFSI has a 5.5 litre engine. Secondly, the gaps between each tier are odd. What happens if a particular car produces 100 kW, or 160 kW, or 300 kW?

Introduction of the revised nomenclature is due to commence later this year. All S and RS variants, plus the Audi R8, are exempt.

California XXL Concept specifications revealed

$
0
0
To coincide with its public début at the Caravan Salon show in Düsseldorf, Volkswagen has disclosed lots more information about the intriguing California XXL Concept. As previously confirmed, this new camper van is based on a medium-wheelbase Crafter.

Numerous innovations have been used by Volkswagen to try to differentiate the California XXL from the myriad Citroën Relay / Fiat Ducato / Peugeot Boxer conversions that currently dominate the large camper market.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Front Side

The most obvious of these is a huge bespoke high top which protrudes over the windscreen and merges into a back-end extension.

While not especially elegant, the rear appendage gives the extra volume needed to accommodate a longitudinally-mounted double bed measuring 2.00 m (6’ 6”) long by 1.70 m (5’ 6”) wide. A spring-plate mattress (plus electric heating and ventilation) should ensure a good night's rest.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Interior - Bed

One potential downside is the lack of conventional cargo doors. Instead, a lift-up tailgate allows access to an under-bed storage space.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Rear Hatch

Unusually, the roof incorporates an enormous panoramic glass panel. Of course, letting natural light flood in is great for creating an airy ambience, but causing a greenhouse effect in hotter climates is certainly a risk. Incidentally, interior standing height is 2.20 m (7’ 2”), so stooping won't be necessary.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Top

Above the cab is what Volkswagen calls an alcove. Essentially, it's a children's bunk measuring 1.72 m (5’ 7”) long by 1.32 m (4’ 4”) wide. If somebody taller wants to sleep upstairs, then an additional section increases the length on one side to 2.00 m (6’ 6”).

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Interior - Alcove

Another novel feature is the retractable wet room containing a lavatory, a foldaway sink and a shower. When required, the compartment's floor area doubles from 600 mm x 600 mm (23.6” x 23.6”) to 1,200 mm x 600 mm (47.2” x 23.6”) by sliding the inner wall across the central aisle. Hot water is generated by a gas-fired boiler.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Interior - Washroom

More traditional design elements include the kitchen. Cooking facilities are limited to a two-burner gas hob, yet strangely two 50-litre capacity fridges are fitted. Also fairly commonplace are the rotating cab seats and offset rear travel seats that together form a dinette arrangement.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Interior - Kitchen

Underfloor heating should keep the interior warm all year round and, usefully, there's an on-board 37-litre gas tank. The fresh water and waste water tanks can hold 140 and 90 litres respectively.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Rear Side

Power comes from a 175 bhp (130 kW / 177 PS) turbocharged diesel engine and the California XXL Concept boasts 4Motion all-wheel drive. Completing the extensive equipment list is pneumatic suspension which provides enhanced ride comfort and, if parked on an uneven camp site, a self-levelling facility.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept (2017) Interior - Cab

Expect an announcement about a production version imminently. Whether or not the rather impractical glazed ceiling survives remains to be seen, although many prospective customers might prefer a solar energy system anyway.

Fiat has created another go-anywhere camper van concept. The Ducato 4x4 Expedition 2017 Show Vehicle – which is being exhibited at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon – differs from its 2015 predecessor in one important respect.

Fiat Ducato 4x4 Expedition 2017 Show Vehicle (2017) Front Side 1

Whereas the older conversion used a retrofitted four-wheel drive system from supplier Dangel, the new van is based on the recently-launched (and factory-built) Ducato 4x4 variant. This features two transfer cases and an automatic central viscous coupling that constantly reallocates torque between the front and rear axles to optimise traction.

The 4x4 line-up includes panel vans and chassis-cabs, thereby providing builders of adventure vehicles with plenty of scope. However, Ducato all-terrain models are only available in left-hand drive form, so their appeal in the UK is likely to be rather limited.

Eliminating the need for rear forward-facing travel seats has given the designers freedom to try something different. BMW has given its electric i3 a mild facelift for 2018, plus a sportier 's' variant is being introduced to expand the model's appeal.

In addition to a more powerful motor, the i3s comes with larger 20” wheels, a Sport driving mode and a stiffer suspension set-up that incidentally lowers the ride height by 10 mm (0.4”).

The technical specifications for the regular i3 are essentially unaltered, but it too benefits from a recalibrated Dynamic Stability Control system and the mid-life styling updates. Redesigned bumpers visually broaden the car, LED headlights become standard and a black finish now covers the A-pillars and cant rails (to match the bonnet and roof).

Unchanged is the 33.2 kWh / 94 Ah battery pack, which is fitted to both the i3 and i3s. Perhaps predictably, BMW has decided to discontinue the lower-capacity 21.6 kWh / 60 Ah alternative.

Range Extender versions that also feature a small 647 cc, twin-cylinder, petrol-fuelled generator to combat range anxiety are still available.

In July, Mini confirmed that the upcoming all-electric 3-door Hatch will be built in Oxford. However, prospective customers must endure a long wait, because a production version isn't due until 2019.

In the meantime, the car is going to appear in concept form at next month's Frankfurt motor show. Distinguishing features include its vestigial front grille, aerodynamically-optimised bumpers and unique side skirts.

So the looks are suitably futuristic, but key attributes such as motor output, driving range and recharge times are much more important. Unfortunately, Mini has yet to indicate what those figures might be.

2018 Ram Harvest Editions unveiled

Ram dealers would undoubtedly sell a Harvest Edition pick-up to anybody, but farmers are the obvious target market.

Indeed, New Holland Blue and Case IH Red paintwork are exclusively available, which means this special edition truck will match other pieces of agricultural equipment. If neither appeals, then alternative shades can be ordered instead (but sadly there's no green option for John Deere fans).

A chrome finish on the 'Wave Mesh' front grille, mirror caps, door handles and bumpers spruces up the exterior. Mud flaps, all-terrain tyres, black tubular side steps, a spray-in bedliner and a fold-out bumper step are also part of the enhanced specification.

A mix of practicality and technology defines the interior. Rubber mats cover the floor, while the dashboard houses a touchscreen-controlled Uconnect infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible, it features satellite navigation and 4G wifi.

Prices in the USA start from $39,910 (plus a $1,395 destination charge) and deliveries are due to begin during the third quarter of 2017.

'Old' and 'good value' are two labels that spring to mind when describing Nissan's 370Z. Although it first arrived at dealers in 2009, an on-the-road starting price of £29,185 for a V6-powered coupé with rear-wheel drive is quite a bargain.

A few cosmetic changes will help the 370Z soldier on into 2018. The headlights and rear light clusters have gained a dark tint, the 19” alloy wheels are redesigned and a black finish has been applied to the door handles and the panel between the exhausts.

Unaltered is the 3.7 litre engine which produces 323 bhp (241 kW / 328 PS) with 363 Nm (267 lb/ft) of peak torque. Similarly, the transmission choice still comprises six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearboxes, but the former now comes with an Exedy clutch that should result in a better shift action.

Sales of the 2018 Nissan 370Z have already begun.

Europe's most popular pick-up is currently the Ford Ranger, but achieving that feat hasn't prevented the arrival of a Black Edition to secure some extra sales.

This special version – which is only available in Double Cab guise – comes with Absolute Black paintwork. There's also a matching black finish for the wheels, front grille and load-bed sports bar.

It's based on the existing Limited trim grade, so the standard specification already includes cruise control, rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone climate control and a touchscreen-controlled infotainment system.

In addition, the Black Edition gains front parking sensors, a rear-view camera and satellite navigation.
