Next month will see the launch of the German-built Holden Insignia VXR in Australia.

As expected, it’s virtually identical to the sporty Insignia models marketed by Vauxhall and Opel in Europe.

Holden Insignia VXR (2016) Front Side

Power comes from a 2.8 litre V6 engine which, with the aid of a turbocharger, produces 320 bhp (239 kW / 325 PS). Peak torque meanwhile is 435 Nm (321 lb/ft).

In the absence of a manual gearbox option, that output is delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Official performance figures have still to be released, though.

Included in the generous specification are heated Recaro front seats, a driving mode selector, radar-controlled adaptive cruise control and a MyLink infotainment system.

Numerous safety features are fitted as standard, too. Among them are automatic emergency braking, lane change alert, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic monitoring.

Holden has yet to confirm a price for its new Insignia.

Honda has confirmed that the renowned Africa Twin nameplate is returning to its motorcycle range.

The new CRF1000L, which was previewed by the True Adventure prototype at last November’s EICMA show in Milan, is set to arrive at dealers across Europe late this year.

To start the bike’s launch campaign a couple of teaser shots have been released.

Uniquely for this segment, the CRF1000L Africa Twin is going to be available with a dual-clutch transmission that has been specially calibrated for off-road use.

No other technical details are known yet. Expect Honda to drip-feed numerous snippets over the coming months, though.

Yamaha NMAX scooter unveiled

Yamaha’s already extensive 125 cc scooter range is gaining another member. The new NMAX, which will be aimed primarily at younger riders, has been described as an entry-level urban commuter.

Despite that role, the NMAX features disc brakes front and rear with a standard anti-lock system, twin LED headlights, LCD instruments and 13” alloy wheels.

Yamaha NMAX (2015) Front Side 1

The engine specification isn’t exactly basic, either. Power comes from a single-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled unit that boasts fuel injection plus variable valve actuation.

Its output of 12.0 bhp (9.0 kW / 12.2 PS) is delivered via a V-belt automatic transmission. Wet weight meanwhile is just 127 kg (279 lbs), so performance should be nippy enough.

Many prospective buyers are going to be equally concerned about economy. They probably won’t be disappointed though, because the NMAX manages to achieve an impressive 129.0 mpg (2.2 l/100km / 45.7 km/l) according to the World Motorcycle Test Cycle.

Yamaha has yet to announce a price.

BMW enhances the M6 Competition Package

From this July, buyers of the BMW M6 Coupé, Gran Coupé and Convertible will be able to order an upgraded Competition Package for their cars.

The modifications begin with the 4.4 litre turbocharged V8 engine. A retune means power is up from the regular 552 bhp (412 kW / 560 PS) to 591 bhp (441 kW / 600 PS), while peak torque rises by 20 Nm (15 lb/ft) to 700 Nm (516 lb/ft).

BMW M6 Coupé With Competition Package (2015) Front Side

Performance isn't dramatically improved compared to the regular M6 models, though. For example, a Competition Package-equipped M6 Gran Coupé can complete the benchmark 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 3.9 seconds instead of the usual 4.2 seconds.

What's more, top speed remains electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h) unless the optional M Driver's Package is specified too. Doing so lifts that figure to a much stronger 189 mph (305 km/h).

Complementing the extra output are some chassis tweaks. As well as a firmer suspension set-up, the steering is more direct and the rear active differential has been altered to deliver better traction.

Finishing touches are provided by a set of two-tone 20” alloy wheels and some black chrome exhaust tailpipes.

2016 Porsche 911 GT3 R racer unveiled

Improved aerodynamics, better handling and reduced fuel consumption are promised by Porsche's new 911 GT3 R. This latest 911 race car, which will be delivered to teams from the end of this year, is based on the road-going GT3 RS.

Of course, the transition from showroom model has involved plenty of changes. For example, the body features carbon fibre reinforced plastic panels and polycarbonate glazing. Such careful material selection has contributed to an overall weight of just 1,220 kg (2,690 lbs).

Porsche 911 GT3 R 2016 Front Side

Furthermore, the wheelbase has been stretched by 8.3 cm (3.3”) to give enhanced balance and stability, there's a massive rear wing and the distinctive 'double-bubble' roof incorporates an escape hatch that's larger than before.

Power is provided by a normally-aspirated, 4.0 litre, six-cylinder, direct injection boxer engine which is now cooled by a single centrally-mounted radiator. Its output of over 493 bhp (368 kW / 500 PS) is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission.

Among the other upgrades are a slightly larger fuel cell and a more protective driver's seat. Modifications to the anti-lock system should give more braking feel, too.

The 911 GT3 R costs €429,000 plus taxes (around £312,300 or US$491,100 at current exchange rates). Porsche is already accepting orders.

Sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro first view

Chevrolet says its 2016 Camaro will deliver “a faster, more nimble driving experience” thanks to less weight, increased structural rigidity and slightly smaller dimensions.

To help maximise that improved agility, the suspension geometry has been engineered to give enhanced levels of feel and handling precision. The electric power steering is specially calibrated, too.

Chevrolet Camaro RS (2016) Front Side

Among the new Camaro’s innovations is a Driver Mode Selector. Comprising ‘Sport’, ‘Tour’ and ‘Snow/Ice’ settings, this device affects various elements such as throttle response and sensitivity of the StabiliTrak traction control system.

Furthermore the range-topping SS version also features a ‘Track’ mode, plus it’ll be available with Magnetic Ride Control continuously-variable damping for the first time.

Three engines are going to be offered, all of which can be mated to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission:

Engine Power Torque
2.0 litre turbo I4 275 bhp
(205 kW / 278 PS)
400 Nm

6.2 litre V8 455 bhp

(455 lb/ft)

The V8 option is the LT1 unit that’s already installed in the Corvette Stingray. About one-fifth of the motor’s components have been modified for Camaro use though, and it’s being reserved exclusively for the SS model.

Sales of the 2016 Camaro are due to begin across North America later this year.

With deliveries due to begin this coming August, Lotus has revealed that the new Evora 400 will cost from £72,000 in the UK. By comparison the Porsche Cayman GT4 - arguably its closest rival - is slightly cheaper at £64,451.

Included in the Evora’s specification are a 400 bhp (298 kW / 406 PS) supercharged 3.5 litre V6 engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, a Torsen limited-slip differential and AP Racing composite brake discs.

Lotus Evora 400 (2016) Front Side

Tyre pressure monitoring, heated front seats, automatic air conditioning, satellite navigation, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera also appear on the extensive standard equipment list.

There isn’t a plethora of options, but those that are available could rapidly increase the invoice amount. Among them are a six-speed automatic transmission (£2,000), cruise control (£300), metallic paint (£900) and leather or Alcantara upholstery packages (£2,500 each).

Starting prices for other key markets have been confirmed too:

· United States: $89,900 (plus local sales taxes)
· Germany: €96,000
· Japan: ¥13,200,000
· China: CN¥1,318,000

Tata GenX Nano launched in India

$

As well as a tailgate that now actually opens, Tata has given the heavily-revised Nano a ‘GenX’ prefix.

But those aren’t the only changes. A new grille, restyled bumpers, smoked headlights and a rear spoiler also help to distinguish the GenX Nano from its predecessor.

Tata GenX Nano (2015) Rear Side

Safety is another aspect that has been improved. Side intrusion beams and a front anti-roll bar have been fitted, plus the front crumple zone is stronger than before. Furthermore, the car’s ride height has been raised to better cope with rough road surfaces.

One thing that’s unaltered is the 624 cc, two-cylinder, fuel-injected petrol engine which still produces 37 bhp (28 kW / 38 PS) with 51 Nm (37.6 lb/ft) of peak torque.

However, for the first time, it can be mated to a five-speed Automated Manual Transmission.

This alternative to the usual four-speed manual gearbox - which even has a Sports mode for (slightly) quicker acceleration - should make for a more relaxing driving experience. Choosing the AMT option does reduce luggage capacity by 16 litres to 94 litres, though.

Tata is offering a selection of three trim grades. As expected, the entry-level XE models are very basic indeed.

Opting for the XM adds some useful items such as electric power-assisted steering, air conditioning, tinted glass and body-colour bumpers.

At the top of the range, the well-specified XT version boasts a four-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, remote keyless entry, central locking, electric front windows and front fog lights.

In India, prices start from Rs. 1.99 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). That’s around £2,025 / €2,845 / US$3,135 at current exchange rates.

BMW builds a bagger

Concept 101 offers a glimpse of what a BMW bagger-style touring motorcycle might look like.

Created for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, it was styled at the firm’s Designworks studio in California and fabricated in collaboration with custom bike specialist Roland Sands Design.

BMW Concept 101 (2015) Side

While similar models from American manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Indian and Victory all feature V-twin motors, BMW has taken a very different approach.

That’s because Concept 101 is powered by an in-line six-cylinder engine borrowed from the K Series range. Its 1,649 cc capacity is the equivalent of 101 cubic inches, hence the choice of name.

BMW Concept 101 (2015) Front SideBMW Concept 101 (2015) Rear Side

According to Edgar Heinrich, Head of BMW Motorrad Design, “Concept 101 is the epitome of elegance, power and luxury on two wheels.”

It’s certainly extremely eye-catching, with a long, low, streamlined silhouette which tapers down towards the rear. Extra visual impact is provided by the use of brushed aluminium elements and, most unusually, real wood trim pieces along the flanks.

For now Concept 101 remains a one-off, but it has the potential to become an intriguing addition to BMW’s line-up.

Abarth has given the 1.4 litre turbocharged engine used in its 595 Competizione a retune.

As a result, power is up from 157 bhp (117 kW / 160 PS) to 177 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS). Peak torque meanwhile has risen by 20 Nm (14 lb/ft) to 250 Nm (184 lb/ft).

Abarth 595 Competizione (2015) Front Side

That output is enough to accelerate the 2015 model from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in only 6.7 seconds, before propelling it on to a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h). Combined cycle fuel economy is still a respectable 48.7 mpg (5.8 l/100km), though.

Sabelt seats, a Monza exhaust system, Brembo brakes and 17” alloy wheels all remain part of the standard specification. Naturally, there are plenty of personalisation options to tempt buyers too.

Available to order later this month, the 595 Competizione is being offered in hatchback and convertible guises with a choice of two transmissions:

2016 Fiat Aegea first view

Turkey continues to play an important role in Fiat’s manufacturing operations, thanks mainly to the country’s comparatively low labour costs. Illustrating that situation is the all-new Aegea, which was partly developed there and will be built at the Bursa plant.

It’s also no coincidence that the Istanbul Motor Show is the chosen venue for the car’s first public appearance.

Fiat Aegea (2016) Front

Measuring 4.50 metres (14’ 9”) long, the Aegea is a very traditional three-box compact saloon that can accommodate five people.

The styling, while neat and inoffensive, isn’t especially exciting. Indeed, the only really distinguishing features are the heavily-sculptured bonnet and a recessed centre section for the roof panel.

Two petrol and two diesel engines are going to be available, together with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Power outputs are said to range between 93 bhp (70 kW / 95 PS) and 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS). All pretty much as expected, in other words.

Sales of the Aegea begin in Turkey this November. Launches will then follow in over forty markets across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Fiat isn’t likely to offer it in the UK, however.

BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage revealed

Along with the Concept 101 motorcycle, BMW has created a one-off 3.0 CSL Hommage for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

As that name suggests, it’s a tribute to the 3.0 CSL lightweight homologation special which first appeared in 1972.

BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage (2015) Front Side

Certain elements such as the roof-mounted spoiler and large rear wing provide obvious visual links between the two cars. The 3.0 CSL Hommage definitely isn’t just a pastiche, though.

Among the modern interpretation’s distinctive features are its widened front wheel arches. Shaped to optimise air flow along the flanks, they appear to (somewhat weirdly) wrap over the bonnet.

BMW hasn’t given any indication of the 3.0 CSL Hommage’s theoretic performance potential. In fact, the only technical snippet released is that power comes from a six-cylinder engine and an eBoost hybrid system.

Renault Kwid unveiled in India

Just the briefest of glances is enough to confirm one important fact about Renault's new Kwid: sadly, it bears no relation whatsoever to the similarly-named concept which was revealed at last year's Delhi Auto Show.

That's hardly surprising though, because a production model actually has to find buyers. Accordingly, the Kwid is a conventional-looking small five-door hatchback with SUV styling cues. Measuring 3.68 metres (12’ 1”) long, it's the first vehicle to be built on Renault-Nissan's CMF-A platform.

Renault Kwid (2016) Front Side

Specification details have yet to be released, but Renault seems keen to point out that a multimedia system incorporating a 7” screen, Bluetooth connectivity and satellite navigation is going to be available.

Sales of the Kwid are due to begin in India during the second half of 2015. There, prices will start from around Rs. 3.00 lakhs, which roughly equates to £3,050 / €4,300 / US$4,725.

Crucially, Renault is describing it as a “global product” so further market launches are expected to follow. Whether or not that includes Europe remains to be seen.

Barbour International and Triumph have collaborated to create a one-off custom motorcycle. Called the BIT1 Street Tracker, it’s based on the Bonneville.

To help achieve a totally stripped-down look the bike’s mudguards, battery box, rear subframe and pillion foot pegs have all been ditched. Changes have been made to the frame too, plus a unique saddle from Redmax Speedshop is fitted.

Triumph BIT1 Street Tracker (2015) Side

This isn’t just a cosmetic exercise, though. For instance, the parallel-twin engine features Keihin 36 mm carburettors instead of the usual fuel injection, and its exhaust gases exit via shortened slash-cut pipes.

Finishing off the modifications is a completely revamped suspension set-up. At the front is a Street Triple R fork, while the rear end gains K-Tech Razor components.

Triumph BIT1 Street Tracker (2015) Rear Side

One of the BIT1 Street Tracker’s key roles is to highlight the launch of a Triumph Barbour clothing collection. Comprising both leisurewear and protective riding gear, it’ll be available to buy from August onwards.

This weekend’s DTM round at EuroSpeedway Lausitz sees the debut of a new Mercedes-AMG GT S Safety Car.

As well as some decals, the most obvious differences compared to the showroom version are an illuminated rear number plate and an aerodynamically-optimised roof-mounted LED lightbar.

The interior meanwhile gains race seats, six-point harnesses and the necessary radio equipment.

Mechanically, things remain standard. Power therefore comes from a 503 bhp (375 kW / 510 PS) 4.0 litre biturbo V8 engine which is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Numerous items from the options list have been added to the car’s specification, though. These include the AMG Dynamic Plus package, a set of lightweight forged alloy wheels, the Aerodynamics package, ceramic brake discs and a Performance exhaust system.

Series participants Audi, BMW and Mercedes rotate the deployment of their course cars throughout the season. Consequently the GT S Safety Car is also due to appear at Zandvoort in July and Hockenheim in October.

As a tactic for securing a few additional car sales, launching a black-themed special edition is quick, easy and lazy. And that probably explains why so many manufacturers have tried it. The latest (once again) is Porsche.

This time the Boxster and 911 Carrera are getting the treatment. Naturally they come with flat black paintwork (rather meanly, metallic black paint costs extra) and matching interiors.

As well as some unique doorsill kick plates bearing ‘Black Edition’ logos, the new models also feature plenty of items that are usually on the options list.

For the Boxster Black Edition, these include a set of 20” ‘Carrera Classic’ wheels, a net-type wind deflector and bi-xenon headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System.

Art cars aren’t anything new, but the latest one by British artist Josh Stika certainly gives the theme a different perspective.

That’s because it combines street art with a Vauxhall Adam Rocks Air.

Graphical swirls on a wall in Sclater Street, East London match those on the car. The result is a clever optical illusion that appears to merge the two elements when viewed from certain angles.

Stika commented: “Having worked within the graffiti scene for the past 15 years I welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Vauxhall and challenge myself further. The brief simply being to put my personality on the Adam really allowed me to create something stand-out, and engage with the car in my home environment of the streets of Shoreditch.”
