Top 10: Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato facts

$
0
0
Aston Martin's latest road car is the Vanquish Zagato. Named after the Italian carrozzerie that helped to design it, wealthy collectors will be the majority of customers.

Here are ten other things to know about this ultra-exclusive model:

1. The two companies have collaborated before

Four times in fact, starting with the DB4 GT Zagato racing car of 1960. Since then, the V8 Vantage Zagato arrived in 1986, followed by the DB7 Vantage Zagato and V12 Vantage Zagato in 2002 and 2011 respectively.

2. Deciding to make a production version didn't take long

A concept debuted at last month's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy. Aston Martin was clearly very satisfied with its reception.

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept (2016) Front Side

3. Manufacturing will take place in the UK

Zagato's involvement doesn't extend to assembling the cars, so they'll be built at the Aston Martin factory in Gaydon.

4. Rarity is assured

Just 99 examples of the Vanquish Zagato are going to exist.

5. Naturally, the price is high

Aston Martin hasn't published a figure, but the cost per unit is estimated to be around £500,000 (roughly €652,000 or US$739,000 at current exchange rates). By comparison, a regular Vanquish is 'only' £200,100.

6. There's bad news if you want to place an order

Despite such a hefty premium, rumours suggest that every Vanquish Zagato has already found a buyer.

7. Classic styling cues are used

The coupé proportions – which are typically Aston Martin – have been enlivened by a distinctive wraparound glasshouse, a retractable spoiler and prominent door sills. Quintessential Zagato touches include a 'double bubble' roof and circular rear light clusters.

8. Exotic materials feature

All of the bodywork is made from carbon fibre. As well as strength and lightness, another advantage of this construction method is fewer panel joins. Carbon fibre trim also appears in the cabin, along with anodised bronze.

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept (2016) RearAston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept (2016) Interior

9. The engine has been upgraded

A standard Vanquish is powered by a 568 bhp (424 kW / 576 PS) 6.0 litre V12 engine. For the Vanquish Zagato that output has been increased to 592 bhp (441 kW / 600 PS), thereby reducing the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time from 3.6 to 3.5 seconds. Furthermore, the suspension set-up has been specially recalibrated.

10. Deliveries begin next year

According to Aston Martin, the first cars should be completed during the first quarter of 2017.

Euro 6 Fiat Ducato announced

$

While it's not especially remarkable that the Ducato van's engines are now compliant with Euro 6 emissions standards, the way in which Fiat has gone about reducing exhaust pollutants is rather interesting.

In particular, the method for controlling oxides of nitrogen (NOx) levels deserves a mention.

Fiat Ducato Panel Van (2016) Front Side

Often, a pure aqueous solution of urea (commonly known as AdBlue in Europe) is injected into the exhaust, where it reacts with the NOx in a process called selective catalytic reduction (SCR). As a result, most of the NOx gets converted into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

SCR will be used on passenger-carrying Ducato models, but other versions – including vehicles destined to be converted into motorhomes and camper vans – are going to be equipped with something called low pressure exhaust gas recirculation (LPEGR) instead.

LPEGR gets rid of NOx by taking the exhaust gases after they've passed through a particulate filter, then cooling them in a low-pressure recirculation system. Claimed advantages of LPEGR over SCR include less weight and lower cost.

The revised Ducato engine line-up comprises:
  • 113 bhp (85 kW / 115 PS) 2.0 litre MultiJet II. This new entry-level option, which replaces the Euro 5 108 bhp (80 kW / 110 PS) 2.3 litre MultiJet unit, can achieve 47.9 mpg (5.9 l/100km) on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 157 g/km.
  • 128 bhp (95 kW / 130 PS) 2.3 litre MultiJet II.
  • 148 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) 2.3 litre MultiJet II.
  • 177 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS) 2.3 litre MultiJet II.
Available to order now, UK prices for the Euro 6 Fiat Ducato start from £21,445 (excluding VAT and on-the-road charges).

McLaren 570S Sprint first view

McLaren's 570S Sprint has been unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Production of this new model – which is intended for circuit use only – will begin next year.

Numerous modifications distinguish the Sprint from a regular 570S, with the most obvious being a prominent fixed rear wing. Made from carbon fibre, it works with dive planes and a larger splitter at the front end to provide extra aerodynamic downforce.

McLaren 570S Sprint (2017) Front Side

Mechanical grip hasn't been ignored either, because slick racing tyres are fitted to lightweight centre-locking cast magnesium wheels.

Inside, the stripped out cabin features a six-point harness, a fire extinguisher and an FIA-approved roll cage. As an indication of the Sprint's designated role, a passenger seat is relegated to the options list.

While the 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 engine and seven-speed sequential transmission are largely unchanged, enhanced cooling comes courtesy of a competition-inspired, high-temperature radiator.

Outputs haven't been disclosed, but according to McLaren, “Power and torque levels have been optimised to ensure the ultimate levels of driver engagement and the best levels of noise.”

McLaren 570S Sprint (2017) Rear Side

As the 570S Sprint is primarily aimed at people who enjoy track days, it doesn't conform with any particular set of motorsport regulations. However, a package is going to be available for customers who want to upgrade their cars to FIA GT4 specification.

UK pricing starts from £148,000.

2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R revealed

$

According to Mercedes-AMG, the GT R “combines the driving dynamics of our AMG GT3 racing car with the everyday practicality of the AMG GT.” That's a bold claim for this new arrival, which will become a third road-going member of the range alongside the entry-level GT and the GT S.

The enhancements begin with the engine. It's still a 3,982 cc twin-turbo V8, but thanks to more boost pressure, better inter-cooling and a higher compression ratio, power and torque have been increased to 577 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) respectively.

Mercedes-AMG GT R (2017) Front Side

That output – which is up by 74 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS) and 50 Nm (36 lb/ft) compared to the GT S – gets sent to the rear wheels via a carbon fibre torque tube and a rear-mounted seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission.

As a result, the GT R can reach a top speed of 197 mph (318 km/h), having accelerated from standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds. As would be expected, 24.7 mpg (11.4 l/100km) and carbon dioxide emissions of 259 g/km on the combined cycle indicate that efficiency isn't brilliant.

Helping the driver to make the most of the car's performance potential are a nine-stage traction control system and an electrically-controlled limited-slip differential.

Mercedes-AMG GT R (2017) InteriorMercedes-AMG GT R (2017) Rear Side

The chassis has received plenty of attention too. As well as bespoke coilover suspension with manually-adjustable pre-load, the set-up includes AMG Ride Control continuously-variable adaptive damping. What's more, the rear axle gains a thicker anti-roll bar and motorsport-inspired 'uniball' spherical bearings on its lower wishbones.

Also fitted is active rear-wheel steering, which is governed by electro-mechanical actuators rather than a direct connection to the steering wheel. With a maximum deflection angle of 1.5°, the rear wheels turn in an opposite direction to the fronts up to 62 mph (100 km/h). Beyond that speed, all four wheels pivot in the same direction.

Various functional and styling bodywork changes distinguish the GT R. For instance, a completely redesigned front end incorporates a chrome-plated Panamericana grille, enlarged intakes and additional 'air curtains' that guide flow through the widened wheel arches.

Mercedes-AMG GT R (2017) SideMercedes-AMG GT R (2017) Front

Hidden from view is an under-body active aerodynamic element. Made from carbon fibre and positioned just ahead of the engine, this deploys downwards when in 'Race' mode at speeds above 50 mph (80 km/h). Consequently, a venturi effect is created that adds 40 kg (88 lbs) of downforce.

Another key component is the rear wing, which is pitch-adjustable. Forged alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres add to the purposeful look.

Dealers will begin accepting orders for the Mercedes-AMG GT R in November. Deliveries are then expected to begin during March 2017.

As its name makes clear, the new Ford GT '66 Heritage Edition commemorates the company's outright victory in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, rather than the GTE Pro class win in this year's race.

Black paintwork, silver stripes and #2 graphics recall the GT40 Mk. II that New Zealanders Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon drove to first place fifty years ago. A unique gold satin clearcoat finish on the 20” forged alloy wheels further adds to the retro look.

Inside, matte carbon fibre adorns the centre console, while black leather covers the instrument panel, door pillars, headlining and carbon fibre seats. Blue seatbelts, as well as gold-coloured dashboard trim pieces and seat cross-braces, provide some contrast.

Although Ford hasn't quoted an exact figure, production of the GT '66 Heritage Edition is going to be limited. Each example will have an exclusive numbered build plate.

Riva speedboats are noted for their elegance and sophistication. They're very attractive qualities to exude so, spotting a marketing opportunity, Fiat has teamed up with the nautical brand to create a special edition.

The new 500 Riva is being offered as either a hatchback or a cabriolet. It comes in a unique paint shade called Sera Blue, which matches a Riva Aquariva Super hull colour. What's more, exclusive twenty-spoke 16” alloy wheels are fitted and the convertible version boasts a blue roof.

With the offbeat Juke, electric Leaf and popular Qashqai receiving plenty of attention, the more conventional Note can get overlooked as a member of Nissan's current range. So, to help raise the hatchback's profile, the unimaginatively-named Black Edition has been announced.

Based on the existing mid-level Acenta variant, its door handles, B- and C-pillar trims, mirror caps, roof spoiler and upgraded 16” alloy wheels are all black.

Also fitted is the body-colour Dynamic Styling Pack which comprises side skirts and redesigned bumpers. Incidentally, the Note Black Edition is available in a selection of paint colours, not just black.

Inside, the theme continues with a black finish for the headlining, centre console and gear knob. The only other specification enhancement is the addition of electric rear windows.

Offered with a choice of three engines, UK prices for the Note Black Edition start from £14,415.

Renault Alaskan pick-up launched

Following the Alaskan Concept's appearance last September, Renault has revealed the production version of its new one-tonne truck.

Essentially, the Alaskan is a Nissan NP300 Navara with a redesigned nose that incorporates a prominent chrome grille, a huge diamond badge and C-shaped LED daytime running lights.

Renault Alaskan Double Cab 4x4 (2017) Front Side

Renault's aspirations are certainly ambitious. Billed as a global vehicle, Alaskan sales begin soon in Columbia. Other territories in Central America, South America, Africa and Europe are then due to follow later. Assembly is going to take place in Cuernavaca (Mexico), Cordoba (Argentina) and Barcelona (Spain).

Numerous variants have been developed, including single-cab and double-cab models with a choice of cargo bed lengths and widths. Availability of the different guises will vary by market, though.

Renault Alaskan Double Cab 4x4 (2017) Side

Like the NP300 Navara, power comes from a 2.3 litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that develops either 158 bhp (118 kW / 160 PS) or 187 bhp (140 kW / 190 PS). Transmission options comprise six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearboxes, which can be mated with either rear- or four-wheel drive.

Curiously, a 2.5 litre diesel unit – also with 158 bhp (118 kW / 160 PS) or 187 bhp (140 kW / 190 PS) outputs – is earmarked for some countries. A 158 bhp (118 kW / 160 PS) 2.5 litre petrol alternative completes the powertrain line-up.

Renault Alaskan Double Cab 4x4 (2017) Rear Side

In double-cab form, the Alaskan boasts a five-link rear suspension (instead of traditional leaf springs) to ensure decent handling and ride comfort. However, off-road ability hasn't been forgotten, because hill descent control, an electronic limited-slip differential and a mechanically-locking rear differential are among the chassis features being offered.

UK prices and specifications for the Renault Alaskan have yet to be announced.

Hyundai is capitalising on its deal to supply Sir Bradley Wiggins' cycling team with support vehicles by launching a special Santa Fe.

The aptly-named Team Wiggins Edition is based on the existing seven-seat Premium SE trim grade. As well as some unique badges, the extra specification includes side running bars, bespoke floor mats and a set of dark gunmetal 19” alloy wheels.

Hyundai Santa Fe Team Wiggins Edition (2016) Front Side

Available now in a choice of five paintwork colours, 500 examples of the Santa Fe Team Wiggins Edition are being produced.

Pricing certainly seems to be very reasonable. For instance, the manual-gearbox version costs £35,995, which is actually £705 less than the equivalent Premium SE model. Ordering a six-speed automatic transmission instead sees the required outlay rise to £38,295.

As per every other Santa Fe currently offered in the UK, power is provided by a 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) with 440 Nm (325 lb/ft) of peak torque.

Isuzu's latest pick-up should be ideal for anybody planning (or, probably more accurately, fantasising about) a trip across frozen tundra.

As its name indicates, the new D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 has been developed in conjunction with the Icelandic firm renowned for extreme off-road conversions. Indeed, this is the first time that an Arctic Trucks vehicle is being made available through a UK franchised dealer network.

Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 Double Cab (2016) Front Side

The modifications begin with some larger 17” x 10” alloy wheels. Sitting beneath wider wheel arch flares, they wear all-terrain Nokian Rotiiva AT tyres that have an overall diameter of 35”.

A revamped suspension set-up incorporates Fox Performance Series dampers. As well as an increased ground clearance figure of 290 mm (11.4”), this results in approach, ramp and departure angles of 36.0°, 32.0° and 23.0° respectively.

Isuzu is offering extended-cab and double-cab versions of the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35.

Both feature the usual 2.5 litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, which delivers 160 bhp (120 kW / 163 PS) to an on-demand all-wheel drive system via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed automatic transmission.

Top 10: UK car sales Q2 2016

June saw 2,051 fewer new cars registered in the UK compared to the same month last year. Sensibly, that reduction is being described as 'market stabilisation' by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The year-to-date total of 1,420,636 was ahead of 2015's corresponding figure by 43,747 units though, an increase of 3.2%. Of course, June's Brexit referendum result would have had a negligible effect on those numbers, but there's definitely some industry uncertainty going into the third quarter.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, seems clear on where responsibility lies for pre-emptive action. He commented, “It's important government takes every measure to restore business and economic confidence to avoid the market contracting in the coming months.”

Unsurprisingly, the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus remain the country's most popular models. Except for the Audi A3 and Fiat 500 being replaced by the Mini and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the rest of the quarterly top-ten table was largely unchanged too.

Kymco's UK dealers will soon have another scooter to sell. The People GT 300i ABS, which arrives next month, is being aimed primarily at commuters.

Power is provided by a 299 cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, four-valve, fuel-injected engine which produces 28.4 bhp (21.2 kW / 28.8 PS). Delivered via a continuously-variable transmission, that output is sufficient for a top speed of 85 mph (136 km/h).

Standard equipment includes 16” alloy wheels, adjustable rear dampers and disc brakes with an anti-lock system. A 12 volt accessory socket and under-seat storage up the convenience factor, while the comprehensive instrument display features a tachometer, a clock and a fuel gauge.

A price tag of £3,999 (excluding first registration fee and road fund licence) means the People GT 300i ABS costs the same as the Kymco Downtown 300i ABS. That outlay looks like decent value when compared to rivals such as the £4,399 Kawasaki J300 and the £4,699 Honda SH300i ABS.

Officially named the Mercedes-Benz Style Edition Garia Golf Car, this new creation is – for now at least – just a concept which explores some design ideas. A pilot production phase might follow in the future, though.

Actually, the short overhangs, upright proportions, two-seat layout and front-end styling mean the end result resembles a rehashed Smart fortwo. Nevertheless, the Golf Car is being described (somewhat jokingly) as “a real sports car”.

Five-spoke wheels, front disc brakes, double-wishbone suspension and even a carbon fibre rear diffuser are fitted, but performance isn't a priority. Although a 3 kW (4 horsepower) electric motor can provide 11 kW (15 horsepower) in short bursts, top speed is limited to 19 mph (30 km/h). A lithium-ion battery offers a range of up to 50 miles (80 kilometres).

To avoid any possibility of dehydration during a round of golf, there's an under-seat refrigerator plus several bottle and glass holders. However, other players are unlikely to be impressed by the Bluetooth connectivity and integrated speakers, which allow music to be streamed from a smartphone.

A 10.1” colour touchpad is part of the specification too. As well as being an interface to control various functions, it can display a course map and an electronic scorecard. Further luxury features include leather upholstery and wood trim.

As an added bonus, Mercedes-Benz and Garia are saying that their Golf Car could be street-legal in the United States, thanks to components such as a pair of LED headlights.

Ford has created its ninth unique aviation-themed Mustang. This latest iteration is a tribute to a North American P-51D Mustang named 'Ole Yeller', which has been a regular sight at air shows and the Reno National Championship Air Races for many years.

The road-going 'Ole Yeller' Mustang is based on a Shelby GT350. As well as a one-off yellow and black colour scheme, the car's specification includes double-spoke wheels, a prominent rear wing, custom Recaro seats, aircraft-inspired gauges and bespoke door-sill plates.

Unchanged is the normally-aspirated 5.2 litre V8 engine, which delivers 526 bhp (392 kW / 533 PS) and 581 Nm (429 lb/ft) of torque via a Tremec six-speed manual transmission.

Like its predecessors, 'Ole Yeller' will be auctioned to raise money for the Experimental Aircraft Association's youth education programmes. The sale is due to take place at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016 on the 28th of July.
