Customer race teams will soon have another car available to them that meets GT4 regulations. That's because Mercedes-AMG has just become the latest manufacturer to join the fray.

Technical specifications for the new Mercedes-AMG GT4 have yet to be revealed. However, it's based on the recently-launched, road-going GT R, so expect a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine to feature.

Commenting on the forthcoming variant, Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG's Chairman, said, “The development of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 is another important step in the continuing expansion of our Mercedes-AMG motorsport programme.

“The excellent feedback of our Customer Sports teams concerning the AMG GT3 and the increasing interest for GT4 race cars strengthened us in our decision. We are delighted to address an even larger target group of amateur and professional drivers and teams in the future with it.”

Subaru has updated the BRZ for 2017

Five years after it was first unveiled, Subaru has announced a mild refresh for the BRZ coupé.

Externally, the most obvious changes are a redesigned front bumper, different ten-spoke wheels and the addition of a raised rear spoiler. Furthermore, the BRZ becomes Subaru's first model to be fitted with LED headlights.

Subaru BRZ (2017) Front Side

Inside, the seats are still upholstered in leather and Alcantara, while better quality materials elsewhere elevate cabin ambience. There's a new smaller multi-function steering wheel, plus the instrument cluster gains a 4.2” LCD screen that displays fairly useless parameters such as steering angle, brake force and G-sensor readings.

Recalibrated damper settings are intended to control body roll, deliver more steering feel and enhance ride comfort. A 'Track' driving mode has been introduced to help take advantage of the improved chassis.

Subaru has resisted the temptation to increase the 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, normally-aspirated boxer engine's output. That means power remains at 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) and either a manual or an automatic transmission can be specified.

However, numerous internal modifications could prove useful for aftermarket tuners. They include stronger cylinder blocks and lower-friction camshafts.

Interestingly, the entry-level SE trim grade is now defunct, so only the SE Lux will be available. Pricing for the 2017 BRZ has yet to be confirmed.

Ford Performance has revealed its latest factory-prepared customer race car. The Shelby FP350S, which isn't street legal, will be eligible to compete in NASA, SCCA and Trans Am championships.

Built around a stronger seam-welded Mustang bodyshell, the enhanced specification includes a front splitter, an adjustable carbon fibre rear wing, an FIA-compliant roll cage and a Sparco seat.

Shelby FP350S 2017 Front

Power is provided by a tuned 5.2 litre V8 engine that benefits from a race exhaust and a more effective oil cooler. Ford hasn't disclosed an output figure, but the transmission comprises a Tremec 3160 manual gearbox and a 3:73 final drive ratio.

The chassis has received attention, too. Among the upgrades are better brakes, a recalibrated electric steering system and a set of 19” wheels.

Although a price hasn't been announced, Ford dealers across the United States are going to begin accepting Shelby FP350S orders soon.

Cumbria-based M-Sport has offered a first glimpse of the all-new Fiesta that will compete in the 2017 World Rally Championship.

Of course, this latest Fiesta WRC has been built according to the FIA's revised 2017 technical regulations. That means more aggressive looks and better aerodynamics compared to its predecessor.

Ford Fiesta WRC 2017 Front Side

Ford Fiesta WRC 2017 Rear Side

Another key development concerns the turbocharged engine. Displacement is still 1.6 litres, but power and torque are up to 375 bhp (280 kW / 380 PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb/ft) respectively. Delivery is to all four wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission.

Expectations for the 2017 Fiesta WRC are certainly high (a situation doubtless aggravated by the withdrawal of Volkswagen from the series).

According to Malcolm Wilson, M-Sport's Managing Director, “Every team is starting on an equal footing and I'm confident that we have produced another car which is capable of challenging – and winning – at the very highest level.

“More than 95 percent has been designed from scratch and our team has had whatever they've wanted to build the best possible car. No expense has been spared, and we start the 2017 season with one goal in mind – returning to the top step of the podium.”

Renault has confirmed that its electric-powered Kangoo Z.E. van is getting a serious range boost.

Thanks to a new battery and motor, 168 miles (270 kilometres) can now be travelled on a single charge (according to the New European Driving Cycle measure). That equates to around 125 miles (200 kilometres) in real-world conditions.

While those figures still might not be good enough to convince some operators to switch from internal-combustion Kangoo models, they nevertheless represent a significant increase of almost 60 per cent versus the previous electric version.

The 2017 Kangoo Z.E. is due to make a first public appearance at next month's European Motor Show in Brussels. Full technical specifications are going to be released then.

Just ten examples of the new Ferrari J50 are going to be built. Each will be tailored to its owner's requirements, and all are undoubtedly destined to become instantly collectable.

As that J50 designation suggests, this product of Ferrari's Special Projects team has been created to celebrate fifty years since the brand first arrived in Japan.

Ferrari J50 (2017) Front Side

Beneath the restyled bodywork is a 488 Spider. The modifications aren't merely limited to bespoke panels, though. One particularly significant structural alteration concerns the reduced-height windscreen header rail, which has to help support a removable two-piece carbon fibre targa roof.

Several other notable changes differentiate the J50. For example, there's a lower central bonnet section at the front, while the rear end gains a unique transparent polycarbonate engine cover. Visually linking those elements is a prominent beltline that rises towards the back of the car.

Like the 488, power comes from a turbocharged 3.9 litre V8. However, for the J50, output has been specially increased from the usual 660 bhp (492 kW / 670 PS) to 680 bhp (507 kW / 690 PS).

A colossal tailgate spoiler plus a conspicuous under-bumper diffuser mean the 2017 Yaris WRC looks most imposing from the rear. Clearly, Toyota Gazoo Racing has fully exploited the latest FIA World Rally Championship regulations, which permit much more design freedom than before.

This new contender marks Toyota's return to the sport after an eighteen-year gap. Akio Toyoda is Team Chairman, while four-time World Rally Champion Tommi Mäkinen has been appointed Team Principal.

Toyota Yaris WRC 2017 SideToyota Yaris WRC 2017 Front

They'll be competing in cars powered by a direct-injection, turbocharged, four-cylinder 1.6 litre engine. Output is rated in excess of 375 bhp (280 kW / 380 PS) and over 425 Nm (313 lb/ft) of peak torque is available. Those figures are combined with a minimum weight of just 1,190 kg (2,623 lbs), so the Yaris WRC's performance should be rapid enough.

A six-speed gearbox and an all-wheel drive system are other key components. Also fitted are two mechanical differentials, an active centre differential and an air- and water-cooled braking set-up.

1987 Nissan Patrol Paris-Dakar entrant restored

1987's Paris-Dakar Rally is probably best remembered for being the first time that a Peugeot 205 T16 won the event. However, a Nissan Patrol was also successful, finishing in ninth place overall and taking a victory in the diesel class.

Sponsored by Fanta Limon, Patrol #211 was crewed by Miguel Prieto and Ramon Termens.

Nissan Patrol Paris-Dakar 1987 #211 Front Side

They certainly didn't have an excess of performance at their disposal. A 2.8 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine produced a modest 144 bhp (107 kW / 146 PS), resulting in a top speed of just 93 mph (150 km/h). Those stats demonstrate that reliability is sometimes more important than outright pace.

After its Paris-Dakar triumph, Patrol #211 languished in a Spanish private motor museum for almost three decades. Rust took hold, components seized and rats feasted on the electrics.

Nissan Patrol Paris-Dakar 1987 #211 Rear Side

Now, though, a team from the Nissan European Technical Centre in Barcelona has spent a couple of years restoring this historic vehicle as an 'after hours' project.

The fate of a second Patrol that competed in 1987 seems less fortunate. After having to withdraw from the Paris-Dakar Rally following an accident, the location of #212 is currently unknown.

Mini's quirky five-seat Clubman is now available in high performance John Cooper Works guise.

It features ALL4 all-wheel drive as standard and a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine. An output of 227 bhp (170 kW / 231 PS) – plus 350 Nm (258 lb/ft) of torque – allow the JCW Clubman to accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 6.3 seconds. Top speed is 148 mph (238 km/h).

Mini John Cooper Works Clubman (2017) Front Side

Efficiency seems to depend on the transmission chosen. With a six-speed manual gearbox, average fuel economy is officially rated at 38.2 mpg (7.4 l/100km), while carbon dioxide emissions are 168 g/km. However, specifying the optional eight-speed Steptronic automatic instead sees those figures become 41.5 mpg (6.8 l/100km) and 154 g/km.

To complement the extra pace, the suspension set-up is firmer than other Clubman variants and upgraded Brembo brakes are fitted. Furthermore, the Dynamic Stability Control system incorporates Dynamic Traction Control, Electronic Differential Lock Control (a locking function for the front axle's differential) and Performance Control (to improve turn-in agility).

Helping to create a suitably sporty appearance are a tailgate spoiler, extended side skirts and unique bumpers. A hexagon-pattern front grille, LED headlights and 18” 'Grip Spoke' alloy wheels complete the look.

In the UK, the 2017 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman has a starting price of £29,345. Among the numerous cost options are a £2,000 Chili pack (which includes a 19” wheel upgrade, heated front seats and a wider choice of upholstery) and the aforementioned £1,600 Steptronic transmission.

Next month will see the arrival of two new additions to Toyota's five-door Aygo range. Named x-press and x-style, the former has a vibrant look while the latter is more restrained.

Both feature 15” ten-spoke alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, automatic headlights and a reversing camera. Inside, their enhanced specifications include automatic air conditioning, the x-touch multimedia system, a body-colour instrument panel and black trim pieces.

The x-press – which comes with Bold Black, Electro Grey, Silver Splash or White Flash paintwork – gains a vivid red full-roof decal plus matching accents on the side sills, front bumper and rear diffuser.

Prices for the Aygo x-press and x-style are identical, so they each cost £11,935 with a five-speed manual gearbox. Opting for an x-shift automated transmission instead would increase that figure by £700.

UK prices for the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo

Next spring – almost three years after it was first unveiled – the Marco Polo camper van will finally arrive at Mercedes-Benz dealers in the UK. Actually, some future owners might have welcomed such a protracted delay as a chance to save up, because this is a rather expensive product.

Based on the long-wheelbase V-Class, the Marco Polo is clearly a direct rival for the Volkswagen California Ocean. Indeed, both conversions feature four belted travel seats, a basic side-mounted kitchenette, a wardrobe, an electrically-operated elevating roof and four berths.

Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo (2017) Front Side

Also fitted as standard by Mercedes-Benz are leather upholstery, automatic three-zone climate control, Garmin satellite navigation, Active Parking Assist, a rear-view camera and 18” alloy wheels. Key options include a side awning (£695) and auxiliary heating (£1,345).

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.1 litre diesel engine that's mated to a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission. Marco Polo buyers get to choose an output of 161 bhp (120 kW / 163 PS) or 187 bhp (140 kW / 190 PS), plus two trim grades are being offered.

Mercedes-Benz V-Class Marco Polo – UK prices
V 220 d Sport £53,180
V 250 d Sport £55,055
V 220 d AMG Line £55,320
V 250 d AMG Line £57,195

To put those amounts into context, the California Ocean range currently costs between £49,975 and £57,440.

There's no doubt that better value, greater internal space and more comprehensive habitation facilities can be found elsewhere.

For example, the four-berth Swift Autocruise Select 184 Travel is available from £39,885. Taking the 6.36 m (20′ 10”) Fiat Ducato panel van as a starting point, it's equipped with double glazing, a combi boiler, blown-air heating and a washroom that incorporates a shower and toilet.

Relatively compact dimensions are potentially a major advantage for the Marco Polo and California Ocean, though. Either could genuinely be used as a family's sole vehicle, thereby avoiding the extra outlay required to run a car as well.

2017 Suzuki Swift first view

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Japan has been chosen as the launch market for the 2017 Suzuki Swift. Dealers there are going to begin accepting orders for this all-new hatchback from next week.

Like the current Baleno and Ignis, it's built on the Heartect platform which promises weight savings and greater rigidity. However, those factors might not matter to prospective purchasers if the latest Swift lacks showroom appeal.

Suzuki Swift (2017 Japanese Spec) Front SideSuzuki Swift (2017 Japanese Spec) Dashboard

Unfortunately, the styling (which Suzuki mistakenly describes as “distinctive and sporty”) is unlikely to help much in that regard. While the previous-generation model was noted for having neat proportions and attractively taut surfacing, the 2017 Swift looks somewhat bloated and its wheels seem to be too small by a couple of inches. Aesthetically a backward step, in other words.

Although full technical details have yet to be announced, the engine line-up is set to include the 1.2 litre, four-cylinder, Dualjet SHVS 'mild hybrid' and 1.0 litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged Boosterjet petrol units.

The 2017 Suzuki Swift will first appear in Europe at March's Geneva Motor Show.

Infiniti reveals its QX50 Concept

Despite the Concept suffix, Infiniti's QX50 seems almost showroom-ready. However, it's officially just a “vision for a next-generation mid-size premium SUV.”

The QX50 Concept has been styled according to the brand's latest 'Powerful Elegance' design language. Also contributing to a distinctive look are marked 'cabin-forward' proportions, which see the A-pillar bases almost sitting over the front wheel arches.

Infiniti QX50 Concept (2017) Side

A future production version is almost certain to feature the innovative VC-Turbo engine. This 2.0 litre, turbocharged, gasoline unit uniquely boasts variable compression ratio technology that can deliver either higher performance or greater efficiency as required.

Output is rated at 268 bhp (200 kW / 272 PS), with 390 Nm (288 lb/ft) of peak torque available. Estimated efficiency figures haven't been released, but Infiniti claims they should rival those of a diesel powertrain.

The Infiniti QX50 Concept is due to debut at next month's 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Top 10: New cars due in 2017

Plenty of new car launches are scheduled for this year. The ten listed below are worth getting most excited about, because they're all likely to have a significant impact on their respective market segments.

1. Citroën C3
Available: January

Proving that superminis don't have to be dull or anonymous, the C3 adopts several distinctive visual cues from the avant garde C4 Cactus.

Citroën C3 (2017) Front Side

Personalisation is also a key selling point. As well as Touch, Feel and Flair trim grades, there's a choice of nine main body colours plus three contrasting roof colours. The 2017 C3 only comes in five-door form, though.

2. BMW 5 Series
Available: February

Following a now familiar industry trend, the new 5 Series is slightly larger yet usefully lighter than before. Indeed, helping to reduce weight by up to 100 kg (220 lbs) are an aluminium boot lid and an instrument panel support made from cast magnesium.

BMW 530e iPerformance Saloon (2017) Side

The 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid features the range's most interesting powertrain. An electric motor and a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine combine to give a total system output of 248 bhp (185 kW / 252 PS). The result is a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 6.2 seconds, 141.2 mpg (2.0 l/100km) on the combined cycle and a pure electric range of 29 miles (46 kilometres).

3. Mini Countryman
Available: February

Don't expect the 2017 Countryman (the largest vehicle ever produced by Mini, incidentally) to win any beauty contests. Nevertheless, this five-seat C-segment crossover does gain additional interior space and a plusher cabin ambience.

Mini Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (2017) Front Side

Initially, customers get to pick from two trim grades and four engines, with prices listed from £22,465 to £29,565. An all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid is coming later on.

4. Nissan Micra
Available: March

Top marks to Nissan for deciding to give the 2017 Micra striking looks. There's also more room inside this B-segment contender, which will be assembled at Renault's factory in Flins, France.

Nissan Micra (2017) Front Side

An 88 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS) 0.9 litre, turbocharged, three-cylinder petrol unit is probably the engine to have, but a 74 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS) 1.0 litre normally-aspirated petrol or an 88 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS) 1.5 litre turbo-diesel are the alternatives.

5. Honda Civic
Available: first quarter

The five-door Civic hatchback is being built in Swindon and exported globally, so unsurprisingly Honda has tried to ensure that the car's dimensions and design appeal to as many markets as possible (including the United States).

Honda Civic Hatchback (2017 European Spec) Front Side

As a consequence of such a 'one size fits all' approach, the Civic's length and width have increased. A high-performance Type R variant – already revealed as a prototype – should be with us before the end of 2017.

6. Land Rover Discovery
Available: first quarter

Considering the current Discovery first appeared in 2004, a replacement was becoming overdue. At first glance, the fifth-generation model resembles a scaled-up Discovery Sport, albeit with a more prominent stepped 'alpine' roof.

Land Rover Discovery (2017) Side

Measuring 4,970 mm (16′ 4”) long, weight has been slashed by 480 kg (1,058 lbs) due to a switch to an aluminium monocoque body that still accommodates seven seats. A multi-mode Terrain Response 2 system, greater ground clearance and better wading ability promise impressive off-road credentials.

7. Škoda Kodiaq
Available: April

Four trim grades, five engines, manual or dual-clutch transmissions, front- or all-wheel drive and five or seven seats might make ordering the Kodiaq SUV a baffling experience for some people.

Skoda Kodiaq (2017) Front Side

In fact, the line-up consists of twenty-four different variants. Prices – which start at £21,495 and go up to £34,895 – reflect that situation.

8. Ford Fiesta
Available: third quarter

Despite being eight years old, the current Fiesta still tops the UK's new car sales charts thanks to a combination of decent driving dynamics, value for money and age-defying styling.

Ford Fiesta Active 5-Door (2017) Front Side

Wisely, Ford appears to be adopting a similar approach for the seventh-generation model. One notable change will be a broader selection of trim grades, including the luxurious Vignale and the crossover-inspired Active.

9. Vauxhall / Opel Insignia Grand Sport
Available: third quarter

In a sector where most drivers seemingly want a premium badge, the Insignia's replacement will have to be very good to attract buyers.

Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport (2018) Front Side

Compared to its predecessor, this five-door hatch has a longer wheelbase and a slightly lower roof line, but weight has dropped by up to 175 kg (385 lbs). All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are going to be offered.

10. Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Available: fourth quarter

Nowadays, any brand with even semi-serious volume aspirations needs to build an SUV or a crossover. Hence Alfa Romeo's Stelvio, which is roughly the same size as a BMW X3.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (2018) Front Side

Only the halo Quadrifoglio version has been unveiled so far. It's powered by a 2.9 litre bi-turbo V6 petrol engine that delivers an impressive 503 bhp (375 kW / 510 PS) via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Q4 variable all-wheel drive and rear-axle torque vectoring are also part of the specification.

2018 will see Ginetta participating in the FIA World Endurance Championship as an LMP1 chassis manufacturer. There won't be a works entry, though. Rather, Ginetta intends to supply three two-car privateer teams.

Names already involved in the project include Paolo Catone, designer of the Peugeot 908, and Adrian Reynard, who is overseeing the all-new car's aerodynamics.

According to Lawrence Tomlinson, Ginetta Chairman: “With Adrian and Paolo on board, the performance of the Ginetta LMP1 is going to be amazing. We are now offering a genuine ladder for our customers all the way from first race to Le Mans which is incredibly exciting for me.”

Technical specifications have yet to be announced. However, Mecachrome is expected to provide the engines, while transmissions are likely to come from Xtrac.

Bentley has begun the new year by launching the most powerful car it has ever produced. The Continental Supersports, which revives a nameplate that last appeared in 2009, will be available in either coupé or convertible form.

Thanks to upgraded turbochargers and changes to the charge-air cooling, output from the 6.0 litre W12 engine is up to 700 bhp (522 kW / 710 PS). Similarly, peak torque has been raised to 1,017 Nm (750 lb/ft).

Bentley Continental Supersports (2017) Front Side

An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, rear-biased all-wheel drive and a bespoke torque-vectoring system complete the drivetrain.

The result is a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 3.5 seconds and a 209 mph (336 km/h) top speed. By comparison, the slightly slower drop-top version records 3.9 seconds and 205 mph (330 km/h) respectively.

Bentley Continental Supersports (2017) Interior

Bentley has enhanced the car's chassis, too. As well as a stiffer suspension set-up that incorporates continuously variable damping, the Continental Supersports features carbon ceramic brakes with extra cooling. Also fitted are lightweight 21” forged alloy wheels.

Unique bumpers, sill extensions, gloss black front-wing vents and dark-tint lights provide some visual interest. Furthermore, the front splitter, rear diffuser and bonnet vents are all made from carbon fibre.

Bentley Continental Supersports (2017) Rear Side

For those customers seeking a less genteel look, a boot lid spoiler and the 'X Specification' pack are among the options being offered. The latter adds more carbon fibre, black rims, a titanium exhaust and a choice of eight two-tone colour schemes.

Deliveries are due to begin in the spring. The coupé costs £212,500, while the convertible has a £233,800 starting price.

Numerous ‘experts’ predicted that economic doom and gloom would surely follow when the UK voted to leave the European Union. Well, if new car registrations are a pertinent measure, then they’ve been wrong so far.

Indeed, figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that 2,692,786 registrations were recorded in 2016, the highest ever annual total.

Registrations don’t always equal sales, though. With Private and Business volumes actually down year-on-year, all of the increase came from the Fleet category. And it can be used to hide dealer demonstrators and manufacturer pre-registrations.

The country’s ten most popular brands were unchanged from 2015 to 2016. In fact, if Mercedes-Benz and Nissan hadn’t swapped places, the league table would have looked identical.

The story for individual models was much the same. Ford’s Fiesta remained unassailable, despite 2016 being the current generation’s final full production year.

The all-new Fiesta is expected to arrive at dealers during the second half of 2017. Provided Ford continues to offer a combination of affordable running costs, decent equipment levels and impressive driving dynamics, then it should have similar customer appeal.

The seventh-generation Ford Fiesta will be launched in 2017.

Compared to 2015, there was no movement in the top five places. Further down the list, the only significant event saw the Mercedes-Benz C-Class displace the Vauxhall Mokka (which has since been superseded by the Mokka X).
